Here’s some stuff you already know:
- The spending cuts rolled out by the current government are some of the most extreme that the UK has seen in decades, effecting the services that most people use everyday
- Festivals are a lot of good fun but are organised by people who think they know what you want to see
- There are clever artists making clever art you don’t get to see
Here’s something new you haven’t heard about yet:
The inaugural MOBILISE Festival
MOBILISE you say? What’s that then?
Unison, the public services union, is organising anti-cuts festival as part of this summer’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The MOBILISE festival runs from 13th to 20th August with a constantly changing line-up of poets, writers, comedians, artists, activists and campaigners – all united in defence of public services.
We have a packed programme of performances with creative Campaigning workshops through the day followed by discussion, debate, film, theatre, and comedy.
How can you contribute? We’re glad you asked…
Art has always been an intrinsic element of social movements and political campaigns. The MOBILISE festival offers an opportunity to explore contemporary political art and influence the ideas and iconic images of these turbulent times. We have space set aside for visual arts – we’re converting over 600 sqm of west end attic into a pop up gallery.
The gallery will be open for the duration of the MOBILISE festival and we would love to hear your proposals for creative responses to this age of conspicuous wealth and crushing austerity.
