(Image:MANYSTUFF, MOSCOW – PARALLEL SCHOOL)

I’ve written at various points over the past year about the tremendously exciting parallel school, (a student-led augmented educational experience), as it has shadowed my own emerging interest in the field of alternative education. There are a couple of issues that i think are important about this;

The initiative starts small, and uses social network tools to connect with likeminded communities, but is built on the dedication and energy of a small group.

In line with the ‘open community’ myth of the net, it still appears to be dealing with a core demographic of similar people, though they may come from different countries and cultures, and be geographically dispersed.

It is aligned to a traditional educational institution but is not bound by it.

In itself and its existence, it is a political act, and directly questions the creeping commercialism of education.

Most of its work appears to currently be self-referential, (about the act of ‘design’ and the process of education), and it will be interesting to see if it moves into other areas.

It is fantastic that at a time when most art colleges are going through the business-as-usual degree shows, groups of students are self-organising in this way.

More resources on alt/self/parallel/future education, knowledge (and related areas) here – (sorry for the sloppy formatting):

More Cakewalk

It was an intense way to start the day, but I’m glad that I went to see the thirteen-hour collage performance at the Arches. I arrived to see the end of act one and the beginning of act two.

Surreal, erotically charged children’s games filled with petting, pointing moving in unpredictable gyrating patterns, shifting, jarring, teasing, jerking, rubbing, laughing, moaning not to mention sequence, plastic, cake, shaving foam, razors, gags, frills, petticoats, breasticles , scarves, roses, microphones thumping, groaning, beating, blaring residual feedback, playful, menacing, dark, sexual, sensual, unpredictable shifting, confrontational, spontaneous improvisational endurance performance.

It was mesmerizing and one hour turned into three until I realized I really needed to walk away. It was too intense to take it all in, the audience could come and go as they pleased or needed.

I went to see Real Discoveries Unexpected Realities 319 by Helena Ohman McCardle. It was at Glasgow University in the Mcmillan Reading Room. What made this work quite interesting was seeing the Joseph Beuys exhibit in the Huntarian and the What Science Could not Tell Us in the Boyd Orr building by Victoria Skogsberg.

These three exhibitions all relate to content of mystic, storytelling, things that aren’t real or things we perceive not to be real. The Joseph Beuys fat chair is more an artefact now than an artwork, but he was such an influential and historically important artist, it was really refreshing to see the two video works that are situated on either side of the Huntarian Gallery.

You can see Real Discoveries Unexpected Realities one more day Friday April 30th.

‘Welcome to Bridgeland’ was a ceremonial opening of Bridgeland, taking place on the South Portland St Suspension Bridge on April 23rd for GI 2010. With local collaborators Guy Veale and Dave Tunstall, artist Jodi Rose conducted a site-specific musical performance and celebration to bridge sounds.

It was ok. I was a little disappointed but I think the project is an ethereal concept that uses the performance to inspire ideas about… well conceptual bridges.

I then went back to Cakewalk, I really wanted to stay for the end but I was exhausted. If you didn’t get a chance to see this epic performance I think you missed something.

Le Drapeau Noir

A great day of art and happenings that could only happen through the festival.

The Mitchell library was my first stop, Speil by David Noonan.

An incredibly elegant and vast space is turned into a set by the sculptural work and installation of Noonan. It’s deceivingly simple, and has a playfulness that is elegant and effortless. I couldn’t help but feeling that a giant hand was hovering somewhere near by to move the objects around as if it could be rearranged at any given moment.

There is anticipation; potential energy to this work that makes me want to go back and see it again. There is a great small catalogue published by Washington Garcia with an interview between Kenall Koppe and Alhena Katsof that adds to the knowledge and experience of the work. £2

There is a film screening on Monday the 26 of April The Rite of Ingmar Bergman at 18:00. Free I hope I can make it.

The long Loch: How do We Go On From Here? I have been following Kate Davis since she did an exhibition for the 2008 GI. It was the first seemingly feminist art that I had seen in Glasgow since moving to here in 2005. She did a residency at Cove Park where she was in email dialogue with Faith Wilding. This current exhibition has grown from that. The thing I think is important about this work as that it is examining and considering past, present and future states of the subject of feminism. The exhibition feels more like a platform than something that exists as a successfully independent exhibition without considering all the research, conversations and invitations to participate. I was slightly disappointed with the show as a exhibit on it’s own, but feel quite happy that Davis and Wilding have started something that I think will continue to grow and include people as it develops.

Subject to Change without notice: Will Foster and Guyan Porter Intermedia

I was sceptical when I walked in, very black and white room that also resembles the semblance of an office. There was lively discussion happening and the freedom to walk around. Porter and Foster have taken up residency in Intermedia gallery examining the fine print. The more I think about the concept and activity the more I like it. I was able to speak to both artists and understand ask questions, this isn’t always the case. It’s only on till next weds, so have a go.

Rough Luxe 102 hope st. Mair Hughes, Yvonne Mullock and Salomeh Grace

This was a great “not what you expect” kind of experience. 102 Hope st. looks like a very sophisticated building when you walk up the stairs. Then you enter the exhibition and it’s all sensory overload with an extreme landscape shift. These three artists have put together a temporary installation that showcases their own work without competing with each other. These Glasgow based artist are quite different from each other, they have composed an intriguing depth of content. Two thumbs up, it’s worth having a look and don’t forget to inhale. I’m not entirely sure about the hay but it is a material that conjures specific memories and scenarios.

I really enjoyed this event. Reliving film that was made in the 80’s and 90’s was surprisingly refreshing and captivating. Louise Crawford, Richard Crompton, Deitch,

Simon Fildes, Shaz Kerr and Bert Ross are all Scottish artists. The work itself was poetic and timeless to me I hope street Level makes this a regular thing; G-Mac has a great screening room with huge seats and beautiful screening wall. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks Malcom.

Le Drapeau Noir

This is a wonderful place to meet up have a drink meet interesting people catch a performance and well if you were me get dressed in a seal costume and do a little pole dancing. I met Urara Tsuchiya, a Japanese artist currently living in London; She caught my eye, as she was wearing a gold jumpsuit and a fur hat, shiny and fury the perfect combination. She did a Nudist Sewing Workshop on Tuesday the 20th (that I missed) as a part of the Le Drapeau Noir performance program. As we chatted she sowed me some documentation photos and said she had more costumes “Should she show me” One thing led to another and low and behold I was having a dance in a Seal Suit. Great Fun! Only could this happen at an art Festival, in a special venue with eclectic and interesting people.

Their program has something on every evening until May2 starting about 7:30 you can just go for a drink and enjoy the installed digital clock by Torsten Lauschmann.

Open from 5-11. Don’t miss it!

So it exists now done by Mignanelli himself.

Entry/Exit an intervention in North Kelvin Meadow by Graham Lister. I like this piece for several reasons, this work is a

part of the artists’ community, it’s a part of a larger dialogue amongst the community that surrounds this open space; it has a history within the community and the work itself talks about the landscape and perspective, physically and conceptually. There’s a really nice story on video that I’ve posted as I was speaking to Graham about the vulnerability of the work to vandals. I’m so pleased it has a happy ending. Take a picnic!

I was not supposed to cycle because I have a bad knee that doesn’t like it when I ride a bike, but I couldn’t resist temptation, there was a white bike outside Kelvingrove art Galleries and I used it to do my route across town and back. I left it where I found it and my knee complained. So I spent the rest of the afternoon exploring one of Radius’s on line exhibitions.

Stramash There are four audio works that are based around historical characters that have been re-invented through found text, creative writing and the voice. I think three of the characters are well known enough not to give you a background but one of them I didn’t know, and the audio work didn’t make sense until I knew this….

TAKI 183 is one of the most influential graffiti writers. His “tag” was short for Demetaki, a Greek alternative for his birth-name Demetrius, and the number 183 came from his address on 183rd Street in Washington Heights.[1] He worked as a foot messenger in New York City and would write his nickname around the New York streets that he frequented during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Knowing this made it much more enjoyable and made the audio piece come alive for me.

I love the diversity and the flexibility that the Internet can bring to Radius. I hope to be off to that temporary bar across from Stereo tonight, I’ll fill you in on the name when I know what it is.

The installation in North Kelvin Meadow is all completed and has been running for the last few days, as part of ‘Radius’. I was quite pleased with the result initially, the pieces working quite nicely in the large urban grassland space.

However, popped down to hang some site photos on the entry / exit railings and found that two of the pieces had gone missing. Now, I have completed intervention-based works in the past and am well aware and prepared for stuff to get moved, broken or, as was the case here, nicked. At the end of the day, the photographs of the installation and site are the real end products when this work is finished.

I went away and typed up a little explanation piece about the work itself; about the photocopy aesthetic and reproduction of real views, and added a sentence at the end saying that if the pieces could be returned, I would be most grateful, so that others could enjoy the work as I intended…..

Low and behold, when I went down to meet and show Stephanie Spindler (curator and director of Radius) round the site, one of the stolen boards was back in situ, and the other was wrapped in a bin bag at the base of one of the sculptures! I was very pleased indeed, and even though the person / people who took the pieces might never read this, I would like to thank you / them for putting them back – makes you realise that there are really decent folk about in Glasgow.

If it was you that took one of the pieces, email me at lister_art@hotmail.com and I’ll arrange to give you the piece in question after the show is done – to say thanks for your honesty!

She has masterfully collaborated with the late Mackintosh as the work sings perfectly in harmony with the space. I think that element of working with a space that is so dramatic and articulated needs someone to pay attention and in a sense collaborate and consider the space as it were a person.

It is sensual but also vast, it speaks of the body but has no semblance of it. I really enjoyed sitting with it and feeling as if I were in the company of a giant angel…

On the other extreme; the Glue Factory is punchy, gutsy, and raw I wasn’t sure what I was walking into it. I don’t think there is another place or exhibition on in Glasgow that has the same feeling as this place. One of the works had some text that I think encapsulated the spirit of the place.

“Fear Less

Less Fear

Fear Less”

It was too much too absorb for the amount of time I could spend there, if you like adventure and a bit of raw around the edges and rare in the middle, don’t miss this. Give yourself plenty of time to go through it. (two to three hours) The refinement is in the art work and the energy of the exhibition.

Modern Terra, transported me to another continent… and the disturbing thing is, it brought me to my front door. This is an important and critical work that speaks of our culture, how we live, what we make of it and how we disregard. I thought it was very powerful. Modern Terra defines themes in our contemporary landscape that are so close we can lean over and touch. Allison Gibbs work, Inland Navigations Void was extremely poignant. It looks as if she will be doing a performance May 2nd at 2pm at the sight.

My Finally of the day was after trekking all the way out to Speirs Warf, as I was leaving somone had parked a White bike behind the Glue Factory. Whoo Hoo! I road it all the way home with joy in my heart. I have to add that when I was riding it through the park I saw someone I knew and waved like I was five years old, frantically full open hand beaming that somone saw me on my white bike. I left it in front of the Kelvingrove Art Galleries. Score!

What a great day!

Today I started the day with artist Graham Lister, he was updating me on his early morning install of Entry/Exit View (# 13 in the mini skinny) an intervention installation in North Kelvin meadow. Here is a sneaky peak in case the coo’s get to it before you.

I was tipped off that Vulnerable Threads had fly posted three collages so I started my hunt. Look for these: one on Argyle st. next to the Ashoka, one down near SWG3 and one near the pedestrian bridge right at the bottom of Kelvenhaugh st. I managed two out of three and they are beauties.

Hint look to the cover of the mini skinny for identifiable characteristics. I don’t want to post any visuals; half the fun is discovering it for yourself!

I spent the rest of the afternoon making my way along the Clyde into town to explore the Glasgow international Book Fair, it’s only on one more day Sat. 17th, don’t miss it.

There were some beautiful and creative books and ideas about books.

The evening was spent at the Sketchbook opening at Welcome home and I’ve posted an odd interview with Phil Kay, I’m not entirely sure why he was there, but I think he was doing a documentary about art… Scary but fun.

A quick snap and shout out to Podcart, Welcome Home, and Central Station for a great night.
