Artists in their cars were interviewed as part of Glasgow International 2010

In Rennes, artist David Zérah had a concept – to interview five contemporary artists in their cars, asking them questions from French art magazine, Galerie Magazine (1989/90).

David started working on his ‘Artists in their cars’ project as part of the Social Landscape programme for GI 2010. He produced a short film/series of stills within the arts community of Rennes. Then he decided to take the same format to Scotland’s art world and a call went out on Central Station where artist and filmmaker Holger Mohaupt was selected.

During GI 2010, David and Holger produced the work as an online residency on Central Station. This project contains the work produced from both artists during this residency.

For GI 2010, Social Landscape appeared as a one-off event, which included a performance by Muscles of Joy, new animation by Katy Dove created during her residency in Rennes, new work by Sophie Macpherson and performances by sonic artist Damien Marchal created during a three-month residency in Glasgow. Images from the event can be seen here.

Art/Roc/Doc is a fly on the wall documentary which followed Glasgow band, Isosceles on a road trip to uncover the London art scene during Frieze Art Fair 2009.

Along the way, Isosceles headlined PLUS, a large group exhibition and series of events produced by Kerry Ryan (Neon and Sign-makers), Declan McMullan (artist/independent producer) and Volume (London), with support from Central Station. PLUS was 72 hours of non-stop artists, exhibits and music, featuring Douglas Gordon, Matt Collishow, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk and Sam Hasler.

Members Tom Duncan and Dasha jumped on board to film and photograph the event, designer Ruth Parker was set with the task of creating a cardboard caravan and together they created a short film which premiered at Glasgow Film Festival 2010.

Hidden Spaces is a collection of work which draws to the surface forms of art sited in hidden spaces.

Hidden Spaces are real, imagined, impermanent, unbuilt, cut-off from the public, demolished, spiritually significant, filmic, politically sublimated and fraught with tension.

Not only do personal interpretations of hidden spaces vary, but these variations are carried into the cultural and professional production of spaces, so an architect’s perception of Hidden Space might be very different from a public artist’s, an anarchist’s or a film location scout’s, and each of these professionals will in turn come to influence how we navigate the space around us.

From this broad and permeable conception of space, we’ve drawn a few more concrete examples of well-known artists working with hidden spaces, and the conceptual logic built up around them to form a collection of Hidden Spaces.

See the full collection online here.

On Sunday 15 November 2009 Central Station ventured away from the web and invited the Central Station community to join us in an afternoon of socialising and connecting.

‘This is…’ sessions gave members the chance to talk about their work to an open audience. With just 8 minutes and whatever visual aids they needed, the members presented a summarised history of their practice to an audience.

Get a taste of these sessions with This is Angharad McLaren below:

Why do you do what you do? Find out what makes people choose to go down their chosen career paths

I Became Because… was initiated after Central Stationer, Ryan Thompson, was curious about what makes people choose to go down the path of becoming artists, designers (graphic or otherwise), illustrators, photographers, film-makers … or whatever they like to describe yourself as.

Submission by Genevieve Ryan

So, Central Station put a call out and made it into a bit of a project. We asked our members to show us on a Post-it note why they do what they do. The results can be seen on our flickr gallery here.
