American illustrator, Kevin Stanton tells us about himself and his work:

I’m a freelance illustrator living in Northern Virginia. I went to school at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and hope to move back soon!

My major medium is hand-cut paper for my illustrations. Cut-paper makes sense to me because it’s a lot more tangible and I like having a certain level of control in my work. The high point of my cut-paper career is definitely my Signature Shakespeare series, where I was hired to do illustrations for Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, and Hamlet. Each play contains more than 40 printed illustrations as well as a laser-cut cover and 5 laser-cut pages (Ophelia, pictured, is one of my favorite laser-cut illustrations from this). Dream job!

Recently, I’ve started working digitally as well, which has been very freeing. It’s odd juggling different ways of working but ultimately I’m excited about it!

Nausicaa

My days are pretty much a blur of the same routine. Wake up, usually do the crossword while watching some cartoons. And then a ton of work until way too early in the morning then sleep for a bit. Rinse, lather, repeat!

Tsukumogami

I have a few projects in the pipeline at the moment. The Shakespeare series won’t be continuing unfortunately, although I’m trying to think of ways to extend the series. I have a few book pitches to various publishers in play. And I’ve also organised a zine celebrating the game FEZ which debuted recently at MoCCA Fest in NYC (you can see the incredible work here). There are a bunch of gallery shows I’m going to be doing work for (Hellboy, a show about spirit animals, 90s pop culture, new classic games) as well as an upcoming solo show with IAM8BIT in LA!
