And Sew for Today is a daily project by Emma Ruth.

Each morning, Emma uses an internet based random word generator to choose a word then she hand stitches it onto a piece of fabric. Without using patterns or pre-planning, Emma grabs some fabric and thread and stitches the first thing that comes into her head. It’s an experiment in typography, embroidery and fun.

This is just a small selection of her work here, see her Tumblr for more.

The Citizens Theatre takes us on a tour through their bustling Wardrobe Department.

The Citizens Theatre is an iconic venue and theatre company based in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. Apart from producing British, foreign classics and contemporary plays, they also host classes, workshops and training programmes.

The Wardrobe Department is a powerhouse of production. During a large main stage show there will be up to 6 staff employed in this department including a supervisor, cutters, assistants and a dresser, who will all work closely with the show’s designer.

Where possible costumes can be sourced from the theatre’s extensive costume store, which houses thousands of items of clothing, accessories and shoes from pretty much any period in history. There is a separate panto store for some of the more outlandish outfits.

The talented team make and fit bespoke costumes across a huge range of styles. Some of the most intricate and impressive work can be seen in period dresses, such as that worn by Siobhan Redmond in Mary Stuart.

Costumes made in-house then join the ever-growing costume store for potential re-use or adaptation at a later date.

The wardrobe department also houses a fitting room and laundry.

Bespoke womenswear designer, Judy R Clark, produces garments designed using the finest of Scottish wools, Harris Tweed and exclusive hand-dyed Nepali silks. Have a peek at where she creates her one-off wears.

My studio is based in the west end of Edinburgh. I produce bespoke wears, which derive from my Scottish heritage; my uncle a weaver in the Hebrides sends me Harris Tweed from his loom in Lewis to my studio in Edinburgh. I combine the hand woven cloth with fabrics from my travels to Nepal incorporating hand dyed Nepali silks, vintage lace and tea dyed tulle to produce handmade captivating collections.

I have a couple of tables; one for pattern drafting, one for sewing. Empty jam jars are filled with bobbins, pins. Old chocolate and biscuit tins full to the brim with buttons. String and pegs create a washing line to hang materials of inspiration from. Images adorn the walls from different ethnic cultures and images from era gone by, historical costume and tear outs from fashion magazines.

I work from my studio full time using a range of different hand sewing techniques and pattern drafting skills. I love to drape fabric round the mannequin creating new forms and silhouettes. My studio is stacked full of Harris Tweed fabrics and a collection of treasures from around the globe.I collect vintage brooches, feathers and buttons to create new pieces to add to my jackets. A collection of shoes, socks for shoots are kept in boxes.

I receive packages through the post from my college Alison Macleod. She works on the Isle of Lewis producing handmade textiles. Her pieces bring new inspiration to the studio. I often have pictures on the wall by twin sister who is an artist which inspires new cloth combinations.

‘I heart…’ was established by Iona Bruce in 2010. With a passion for creativeness & a strong belief that the arts should be accessible to all, she embarked on the solo project enabling people to learn new skills, experiment, create & showcase their work. ‘I heart…’ has also just started a monthly zine called ‘Heart and lungs’.

My name is Iona & I run ‘i heart…’, where we do a whole host of different things including organising community arts projects, freelance crafting & facilitating craft workshops. We also have an online eco-shop full of handmade arts & crafts made from a range of talented designers & artists.
My workspace is at home beside my beloved Singer sewing machine where I sew, cross-stitch & knit my own work. However, my various balls of yarn, fabric, needles and other bits & bobs have a tendency to end up scattered throughout the whole house!
