Fatima tells about her studios in her career so far and her prospective period at MANY Studios.

I am a Peruvian artist living and working in Lima. Currently interested in Latin-American gender roles and ideas of modernity, specifically through the imported and reinterpreted aesthetic manifestations of pop culture. In the recent years, my worked has evolved towards mixed media and interactive installations that mainly explore Latin-American popular culture: It’s aesthetic patterns and contents as the integrative elements of an entire continent.

Romantico Elegante

My work spaces have changed a lot over the last four years or so. Actually, it is difficult for me to afford a permanent studio so I try to rent one for a while every time I have to make work for an exhibition. I also have another job that does not allow me to spend that much time in the studio, although it does allow me to pay my bills and to finance the production of my pieces.

The first studio I rented was a super small place in the house of a very conservative and Christian lady who failed to greet me when one day she came in to clean the space and found a pop-up edition of the Kamasutra I bought in an antique shop (I’m a big collector of useless things). After a while, along with my cousin, who is a photographer, I rented the bottom of a house in Chorrillos. We were evicted quickly because the owner decided to sell it. We felt sad because it was a very nice and quiet place to work and especially to get together, drink beer, and talk about our work (and problems). I still have not paid the phone bill for that place. The best studio I’ve ever had was one that I subleted from a friend to make work for a solo show last year. A nice, big house, located in one of the most beautiful areas of Lima, a place that sometime ago hosted La Culpable, an artists collective that is very important for the local art scene of Lima. After that I traveled to New York for three months to do a residency at Flux Factory, where I had a studio which was also my room. I had a tiny space between the bed and the wall to walk and a desk in which I drew a lot. The prettiest light ever came through that window.

So I have not been in permanent studio for more than a year, but I have been constantly changing my work space according to my needs and possibilities and many times I had to limit myself to work in my room or in my office desk (making a mess in the process). Less than a month ago I moved my studio to the house of a great friend I’ve had since I was a teenager. She bought this house in Barranco and lives there with another great friend. I’ve been very lucky, not only because the space is quite big and comfortable and because I rent it at a much lower price than it is worth; I can also spend time with my friends and laugh a lot.
Now I’m working on a new project which will be presented during Glasgow International this April in the Project Room of Many Studios. It’s been a big challenge because it is the first time I work on a video but very exciting at the same time. The video shows part of the Peruvian Amazon Uiniversity, a modernist structure built in the Amazon rainforest that embodies a number of contradictions. It was supposed to be created as a response to the demand for a higher education institution in the area, as voiced for decades by the local communities. But this building is just evidence on how the government spends a huge amount of money building structures that show its power instead of investing on a decent educational system. Although I find the architecture fascinating, the building imposes itself over nature, interfering with its order, and doesn’t respond to the community’s necessities.

The video progressively shows all spaces of the university revealing what the important structure contains: a precarious space in which learning is not fostered and where the lack of it is concealed. I talk about a particular contrast between modernism and lack of progress one constantly finds in Latin American societies. To shoot the video, I spent several days in the jungle. It was a hard work, especially because of the weather in Iquitos, but luckily I had the best team working with me.

Alison Fullerton is Fundraising and Communications Manager at Wasps Studios. Here she shares her early career.

Alison Fullerton is Fundraising and Communications Manager at Wasps Studios. Wasps provides affordable studios for 750 visual artists and 28 arts organisations across Scotland.

Like lots of people I’ve done tons of jobs including working in a pie and bridie factory (I’m from Forfar) but the jobs below are the ones that stick in my mind.

1. Sales Assistant, Jeffrey Rogers

Ladies over a certain age will remember Jeffrey Rogers, a kind of wannabe River Island that didn’t make it through the ’90s. This was my job through my student days….

2. Australian Jobs
I spent a year in Australia after graduating and did everything from data testing at Citibank to working in a coffee shop to washing dishes in hostels, all in between drinking too much Tooheys New and cheap wine.

3. Sales Person / Administrator, ‘Neverfail Spring Water’

But my favourite of all these jobs and one worth mentioning was a stint at ‘Neverfail Spring Water’ in Sydney. It was a new company and my job was to call businesses and get them to take free trials of Neverfail Spring Water Coolers. You wouldn’t think it would be difficult selling free water in the summer in Australia but I struggled badly. After a few days the boss spotted my lack of sales talent and gave me one of the best jobs there doing admin work. Sometimes it pays to be bad at something.

4. Customer Advisor, Scottish Power

I then went from the Technicolor of Australia to a call centre in rainy Glasgow. It was a dark time. For anyone who’s worked in a call centre you’ll know what an utterly sole destroying job it can be. I won’t dwell.

5. Admin Assistant, Wasps
I needed to get some more office experience fast when I saw the job for Admin Assistant advertised at Wasps way back in 1999. I knew nothing about visual art back then but managed to win over my interviewers at the time (one of them was Chief Exec. David Cook who is also still at Wasps today). I actually said in my C.V. that I had a “real zest for life”. Every now and again David will dig out my original application for a right good laugh. I’ve been incredibly lucky at Wasps and have been able to develop my role as the organisation has grown over the past decade.

…Not so Urgent.

“Maria Thereza Alves, a Brazilian artist living in Europe, researches social and cultural phenomena working particularly with situations which question social circumstances about what we think we know and who we think we are instead at where and how we actually are at this time.” (GSA Events Blurb about M T A)

The talk “Urgent and Not So Urgent Possibilities” was not a well-attended GI lecture event. The artist spoke specifically about some examples of her previous work, in a sparsely populated GFT Theatre on 23rd April.

When an artist sets about discussing their work, it can be expected that some of the conceptual foundations may not be easily transmitted to the viewers or listeners. I would suggest this is because of the fact that underlying principles are shaped by a multitude of factors. These factors can encompass beliefs, opinions and experiences, and the internal nature of the intentions behind art works can be difficult to articulate in a meaningful and quantifiable manner.

The reason that I make this admittedly general statement regarding the conceptual basis of art works is that it seemed that the articulation of the conceptual foundations was absent from Maria Theresa Alves’ talk. These elements surely should have been foregrounded as being key within her practice?

The examples the artist chose to showcase were quite wide-ranging in terms of format, and I would have expected to gain a sense of them by noticing and understanding the theoretical underpinnings they shared.

However, although some sort of connecting thread was visible on a few occasions (about “what we think we know and who we think we are”), her works felt somewhat disjointed, perhaps even coming across either as being developed on unsteady foundations, or as morphing into outcomes based on uncertain/very generalised lines of inquiry. In particular, could one perhaps question both the conceptual process of identifying and hypothesising the travel ideas and the relative merits of the frieze outcome of her ‘seed-migration-through-the-ages’ project for the Guangzhou Triennial?

It could be that rather than the exploratory / historical / ecological art projects (as they seemed to be described), her work is actually much more akin to a set of personal stories?

It could be that the very generalised narrative structure which the works seemed to possess was actually intended to bring to light issues connected with the lack of knowledge we have about the creation of our surrounding environment?

In my mind, such analysis of the works would make them, without exception, more interesting. Instead, these types of ideas were not acknowledged and this left me wondering if they were perhaps much less successful works than they pertained to be?

I do not think that a relatively short presentation talk, to such a small audience, talking briefly about a few works can really be expected to do either an artist or their practice justice. The fact that you also cannot seem to see any of Maria Theresa Alves’ works in Glasgow during GI does also not seem to make sense.

I believe that the Sculpture Studios are involved with the artist in a residency of sorts and I hope that the result of this can be shown in the city. Otherwise it could conceivably be the case that seeking out new work by Maria Theresa Alves make just become a “not so urgent possibility”
