Claudio Pfeifer has worked as a photographer and video artist in Germany. He now publishes art books and zines in Berlin. Here is were Claudio creates…

—

Claudio Pfeifer lives and works in Berlin in different fields of visual arts. After studying Photography & Video at Art School, he moved to Berlin to study Cinematography at German Film School. His Photographic work is abstract, constructed and focuses on movement in still images. He has shot several experimental short films, documentaries and also worked as Director of Photography for Feature Films and Music Videos.

For the past two years, Claudio Pfeifer has been publishing art books and zines with an emphasis on photography. He founded the Publishing House PogoBooks which is the tangible representation of a very vital existing community of young artists.

PogoBooks understands itself as part of a long and rich tradition of other DIY projects and self-publishers. This includes offering publications at low costs. In this way, PogoBooks has already managed to publish 40 titles since 2010.

“This kind of publishing requires handiwork and heart. Nonetheless, the books have to be affordable. That’s what Pogo means to me,” says Pfeifer.

Print Fetish is a weblog featuring news, information, reviews and history on the subjects of beautiful magazines, self-published ‘zines, handmade books, small press, comix, art books and miscellaneous printed ephemera. The site features daily reviews of new titles, trends, updates on events and interviews with fascinating people in the field of print media.

Celebrating beauty in print, the blog hopes to keep worthwhile print alive (while at the same time hoping the internet manages to do away with ugly consumerist magazines and newspapers). In their own words “when we talk about beauty, we’re not simply talking about what it it looks like, but its point of view and editorial whole. We hope we can spread the word on these beautiful objects, and get you to spend money on them, rather than the average condy nasty.”

Find out more about award winning Latvian comic kuš!

kuš! (speak kush!) is the only comics magazine in Latvia. kuš! aims to popularize comics in a country where comics are practically non-existent and promote both Latvian and international artists. They were awarded The Best Alternative Comic at Angouleme Festival, the the biggest comics convention in the world, in January 2012.

Since it was founded in 2007, kuš! has published 20 anthologies with short comics from 60 Latvian and 140 artists from all over Europe and rest of the world, including China, Japan, Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, USA and Canada. Some artists are already well known, while others are still emerging. Sometimes kuš! holds open calls when everyone is invited to submit their work.

All the issues are in full color, but the format and names change according to the obstacles of funding and moods of the editors. Every issue contains artistic comics from international and Latvian artists to a certain topic which changes every time. While in the beginning all the comics where published in Latvian as kuš!, since 2009 the anthology has been published in a smaller format with the name š! in English, therefore reaching a wider audience outside Latvia.

The latest issue was š! #9 ‘female secrets’. It contains 160 pages of comics from 27 female cartoonists. Another recent project was š! #8 ‘midnight sun’, featuring some of the most-cutting edge comics from Finland. You can get both from Kuš! webshop.

kuš! also organises exhibitions, workshops and takes part in international festivals.

Rum Lad producer & illustrator, Steve Larder, talks to us about his zine...

Rum Lad is a zine I started in 2006. There’s no particular reason behind the name, but the term ‘Rum’, is typically used to describe someone/something that is somewhat peculiar. I grew up in rural Lincolnshire where you’d hear this phrase quite often, so it seemed appropriate.

The first issue was a split with ‘Scared of Bees’ zine and was limited to 100 copies. It was started with the intention of contributing to the zine community which I was very much interested in. I liked the idea of being part of a network and potentially making connections with others with similar ideas, etc. I’m also into printed media and like to keep things as tangible as possible, something which I have attempted to continue in my artwork. One of my favourite things about zines is holding the finished article in your hands and saying ‘I did that’.

My most recent issue featured a visual diary of a USA tour from summer 2010. For the future I have plans to document a couple more tours (USA again and European) as well as splits with Gadgie zine and Ont’ Road zine.
