Find out more about Loch Ness Film Festival

It’s now approaching the 3rd event of the Loch Ness Film Festival and it seems roughly around 20 lifetimes ago since the first one kicked off back in 2010. Hopefully all involved in running the festival have learned a bit and every year it’s back to the firing line. Running an independent festival is a bit like being on the apprentice, new developments turn out of the blue and plans change from week to week and new ideas and people seem to pop up from nowhere.

After last year we enjoyed the comedy block of short films mostly by talented Scottish filmmakers and are going for a theme of comedy at this years festival. There isn’t a better feeling watching a film by hearing people laughing and seeing them smiling before, during and after the screenings. Comedy in all forms either being played dumb or intelligently cheers up the soul so we looked for feature films in Scotland that played to those strengths and we always go out to put on a bit of Highland hospitality and get the banter going before and after the screenings to make everyone feel more comfortable.

We were lucky in that we came across 2 Scottish independent features with one from Graham Hughes from central Scotland called the Big Slick and another belter from David Ryan Keith from Aberdeen called Attack of the Herbals. We are screening both of those films back to back at a new venue we will be using called the Loch Ness Backpackers Lodge, and we hope most of the foreign souls residing over the weekend at the lodge who will attend will be able to understand the Scottish accents and slang on offer on the Friday night of the festival and hopefully they don’t look confused and ask for subtitles!

After picking our Friday night double bill we then looked for a feature film to screen on the Saturday Night that would appeal to everyone from locals to tourists and went for one of the very first Scottish comedy films that still stands up as a classic today in Whisky Galore. So overall we have a feature set in the highlands, a feature set in the central belt and one in the north east.

To round off our Scottish feature list we found an action revenge thriller set in the North East entitled the Suppressor by Ara Paiaya to be screened on the Sunday afternoon. When we first watched the film we were surprised how good the action scenes were executed and have never seen anyone submit an action film to the festival, which we like features to be entertaining, funny or dramatic and a bit different to what you would usually get on your normal Cinema listings.

And now with the short films being decided at the end of April all that’s left is to get the show on the road again and deal with the usual questions about the monster? And yes I have seen it and she enjoys a wee dram at the Drumnadrochit Hotel on a Sunday afternoon, and if you have been or fancy coming to Loch Ness you’ll agree you won’t get a film festival with better scenery, just don’t blame the weather on us.

So the final line up at the festival being a Scottish comedy double bill starting May 25th at the Loch Ness Backpackers Lodge in Lewiston kicking off at 7pm with the Big Slick and followed at 9pm by the Attack of the Herbals.

Saturday is our full day of jam packedness (not even a word) and everything is screened at the Craigmonie Centre in Drumnadrochit with the short film blocks from 12-2pm and 3-5pm and then grab some fish and chips and rest before Whisky Galore at 8pm.

Our Sunday starts off at the Craigmonie Centre in Drumnadrochit from 12-2pm with a short film block and then we head off the real countryside about as rural as you can get for a film festival with the venue being the Abriachan Hall with a barbeque from 3-4pm (sunshine please mr weatherman) and then the last film the Suppressor from 4-5.30pm and then it’s the festival over for another year until 2013 before I get asked the usual question and yes I have seen Nessie, she frequents in the Clansman Hotel for Sunday breakfast.

AND (Abandon Normal Devices) is offering an unique opportunity for an artist to be in residence on a canal boat on and around the Manchester and Pennine waterways for approximately four weeks in August and September 2012.

The aim of this residency is to offer artists a dedicated period of time to develop research or a project in an unusual environment. AND are seeking applications from individuals / groups working in emerging artistic practice that questions normality. The artists should have an established background in their respective fields and should be able to demonstrate how a residency period at AND will assist the development of their research and practice. AND also encourages applications from collaborating artists, collectives and families.

There is a budget available to the resident artists/group, including an artists’ fee and stipend of £1500 GBP (to include any materials and/or production and living costs) and travel expenses to the UK of up to £1000 GBP.

EyeContact is a forum built to encourage art reviews and critical discussion about the visual culture of Aotearoa New Zealand. It is edited by John Hurrell, a New Zealand writer, artist & curator.

What started as a blog by the same name has grown into a website with the aim of helping generate talk and writing about art – and encouraging the visiting of exhibitions.

John says about EyeContact:
“There is a lot of promotional writing in Aotearoa New Zealand to help sell art, but not much evaluation or banter over related issues – with participants willing to be identified. That area is admittedly a notoriously difficult undertaking, for reasons both philosophical and social, but it is ultimately at least worth attempting if the intellectual climate of this country’s art community is to become more sophisticated.”

Whether you are just interested in what is happening in the art world globally or are interested in art criticism and review, it’s worth taking a look at EyeContact.

Tour of cultural spots of Zagreb

The force behind Papergirl Zagreb, Ivana Rezek, gives us a tour of her city’s cultural spots.

//////////

There a quite a few interesting places in Zagreb, Croatia, that would be worth visiting, if you ever find yourself here – these are some of my recommendations.

Museum of Broken Relationships

The idea for the museum was conceived by Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubišić – recognizing that most of our life events are marked with rituals and ceremonies, but that such a ritual is misssing when it comes to ending a relationship. They asked people to share their break-up stories and donate an ‘artefact’ of the ended relationship. The idea was a huge success – the museum has amassed a vast collection of stories and objects, toured the world with the travelling show, and won the Kenneth Hudson Award for the most innovative museum in Europe. The objects on display vary from teddy-bears to axes, from wedding dresses to shattered mirrors. The stories behind them and the break-ups are often complex, moving, or even shocking – this exhibition leaves nobody indifferent.

Within the museum there is a charming coffee-shop where you can relax after seeing the show, and a gift-shop with unusual and funny souvenirs.

Lauba

Situated in a former factory, Lauba – People and Art House, exhibits the works of the younger and middle generation Croatian artists, and also serves as a laboratory for art experiments and a place of cultural innovation. This is the best place to get acquainted with the current Croatian art scene. The non-permanent exhibition changes monthly, featuring a large number of artworks, and is accompanied by workshops, lectures, artist talks and film screenings. It is also possible to watch the artists as they create their works or set up their exhibitions.

Lauba is open from 3-11 PM, and the coffee-shop at the entrance is a cool place for relaxing before or after visiting the show.

Medika

Yet another former factory, squatted a couple of years ago and turned into a meeting place for people of various interests. Within Medika, there are two galleries – the Grey gallery dedicated to graffiti, underground and street art, and Jogurt, which shows the works of young contemporary artists. Medika also hosts several festivals throughout the year (for example, Vox Feminae – Ladyfest Zagreb), as well as numerous music gigs of various genres, from dubsteb, reggae, and blues, to heavy metal. There is a very well-equipped library as well as a weekly flea-market, improvised cinema and studio space, garden in which a group of enthusiasts is growing vegetables, a space for multimedia experiments, and numerous workshops in which you can learn everything from computer science to circus skills.

Booksa

A coffee-shop for book lovers, near the centre of the town, with a great variety of local and international newspapers, magazines, and comic books. On an almost daily basis there are book-related events – book club, discussions, quizzes, talks with guest writers from Croatia and abroad, creative writing workshops. There is also a weekly French book club, French Wednesday. In the evenings you can enjoy acoustic sets by indie bands.

Muzungu

What makes this coffee-shop special is not just its lively and energetic interior, but also the fact that this place is dedicated to promoting fair-trade. It serves exclusively fair-trade coffee, and in their shop you can find hand-crafted objects and Bead by Bead jewellery from Africa. In the evenings there is live music – usually indie, jazz, or folk music by local bands, and stand-up comedy shows. Muzungu also gives local artists a chance to show their work on the walls, and organises charity/humanitarian events.

Greta

Greta is a recently opened gallery on the main street in Zagreb. It has already become very popular, due to their weekly rotation of exhibitions, interesting choice of artists and artworks, and openness to experimental art, installations and performances. This is the place where you can see the more edgy and thought-provoking works and meet a lot of interesting people. It is a very welcoming and fun place, and exhibition openings at Greta usually turn into parties that last until late into the night.

Studentski Centar

A place where you’re guaranteed to find a lot of interesting things is definitely Studentski Centar (Student Centre). The main building contains a students cafeteria/restaurant, a cinema, and a large venue where several annual festivals (arts, crafts, photography, music, and film festivals), exhibitions, and many music gigs take place. In the surrounding buildings you can find a gallery which shows young and contemporary Croatian artists, a theatre, and a coffee-shop. This is the place where you can get free dance lessons, attend photography and art workshops or participate in an art project yourself, listen to an interesting lecture, watch an art film, or simply attend a party in the evening.
