Anna Gibb is a Glasgow based illustrator with a thing for maps, cities and history.

Inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, The Architecture of Heaven + Hell is a fine example of Anna’s style and how she manages to incorporate her areas of interest to create an intricate story of many parts.

Anna says of the piece:
“Architecture has many facets, some good and some bad and I thought it might be interesting to depict the two sides of the profession in a drawing inspired by Dante.”

We suggest browsing through Anna’s website too – it’s a well designed showcase of her projects and work.

Comic book artist and writer, Edward Ross, invites us into his work space...

Edward Ross is an Edinburgh based comic book artist and writer. He is best known for his film theory comic ‘Filmish’, and is currently working with Glasgow University to create a comic about research into Malaria. Edward also helps to run the Edinburgh League of Comics who organise events and meet-ups around comics in Edinburgh.

—

I kind of fell into making comics after university, and I’d always thought I wanted to be a film-maker. But comics, which I’d always had a fascination for, took hold as soon as I started playing around with the form and realised just how easy and accessible they can be. Unlike film, here was an artform that didn’t require budgets and resources to get your work out there; fundamentally all you need is a pen, paper and access to a photocopier or the internet. Plus, there’s something exciting about working in a medium that is still learning what it is and what it can be.

The best thing as an artist is getting your work out there. It’s a great thing to be able to cheaply and easily produce artwork, and be able to distribute it really widely, and I think comics are one of the best placed media for that. Everything in their production can be as small and personal, or as big and collaborative as you want, and any which way you do it, there are never any restrictions on what you put on a page except for what you’re able to draw.

For those who are interested in technical stuff, in the last year I’ve moved towards exclusively producing my work digitally. I use a Wacom tablet and an iMac. I think the move initially slowed me down as I adjusted to the feel of drawing digitally, but I think it’s been worth it. My work has expanded in its complexity and detail, and I’ve been able to create compositions and images that I guarantee I wouldn’t have been able to do on paper. That’s not to say it suits everyone: most of the artists I admire work on paper, and I know a number of people who have in recent years moved away from digital and gotten their hands inky again! And in a lot of ways I hope I can do the same eventually… there’s nothing as satisfying as a flawlessly inked comics page.

An exhibition documenting the Post Punk explosion in Glasgow and beyond in an era when the city's musicians were a focus of the global music industry.

Harry began his photographic career in his Glasgow home town, standing outside the Apollo, flogging gig-goers newly-developed shots from bands’ Edinburgh shows the night before. Harry’s impulse to guerilla lensmanship swiftly drew him to London: from 1979 to 1984 he was a staff photographer for the music weekly Sounds, providing countless front covers. During those five years, Harry’s photographs covered the post-punk waterfront, from Blondie to David Bowie; the Associates to Devo by way of Joy Division, Bryan Ferry, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Birthday Party, The Cramps, The Clash, Altered Images, Penetration, The Specials and Suicide (not to mention Wham!, ABC and Spandau Ballet).

At that time, Harry’s London flat also became home to fellow Scots migrants like Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, Josef K and The Bluebells. Harry thus became one of the first few photographers to capture the fey arrogance of Edwyn Collins and his Postcard cohorts, and subsequently appeared in the Derek Jarman video for ‘What Presence’. Several of these photos comprise Harry’s first career retrospective at Street Level Photoworks.

In addition to the expected band portraits and live-action front-row shots, there are a host of unique photos: salute the militant gay triumvirate of Jimmy Somerville, Tom Robinson and Andy Bell as they march for homosexual equality. Savour Peter Capaldi – years before he learnt to swear and mutated into Malcolm Tucker – looking cute and wholesome as bow-tied front man of Glasgow band The Dreamboys (with favourite US late-night chat show host, Craig Ferguson on drums). Taste the flying mud, baying skinheads and noxious aroma at T In The Park’s ill-fated grandsire, the 1980 Loch Lomond Festival.

Harry was born in 1954 in Helensburgh and attended Penilee Secondary School, then on to Paisley College of Technology where he gained a BSc. in Electrical Engineering. In 1976 he attended Jordanhill College, and became a teacher of Maths and Physics. He is a self-taught photographer whose interest was inspired by taking photographs at gigs in the late 1970′s. Following a long and productive stint at Sounds music weekly as a photographer, Harry became editor of Marvel Comics publications such as Care Bears, Flintstones, and Star Trek. In August 2002 Harry suffered a brain aneurysm and returned to Glasgow in February 2006.

The exhibition is co-curated by Ken McCluskey.

A Top 5 of projects by members on our network that call for some participation from you...

Here on Central Station we like to encourage the use of digital platforms for good & not evil. Hence, coming across creative folk using social media as a tool for orchestrating a creative project brings a smile to our clock face. These are our Top 5 projects by members of the network that call for some participation from you:

1. CHCH 220212 Type Branding Poster Project
Behance
Peter Godkin

Both a call for collaboration & a creative response to a natural disaster, the aim of this project is to bring the World’s attention the continuing problems of the People of Christchurch. The intention is to show support not only the general public, but to fellow creatives in Christchurch as well.

2. Papergirl Zagreb
Twitter – @PapergirlZagreb
Ivana Rezek

If you aren’t familiar with Papergirl, it is a project that seeks to bring art to the community in a new, exciting and participatory way; directly and freely by bicycle. It happens in cities all over the work. Papergirl Zabreb are currently looking for your art to spread around the streets of Croatia’s capital.

3. Sketch a Day
Facebook
Artist

Hoping to inspire a year of drawing, the artist is on a mission to create a sketch a day throughout 2012 and is encouraging input from the public.

4. Smile Project
Behance
Marek Wysoczynski

Originated in Poland, this project is calling for your smiles. The idea is that people from all over the world submit their “autograph” in the form of an image of their smile, the smiles will then be exhibited in Children’s hospitals globally.

5. 28 Drawings Later: February Drawing Challenge
Facebook
Victoria Evans

This is a drawing challenge and social networking project created by Visual Artist Victoria Evans. The result iss an evolving, month-long, participatory online gallery which encourages everyone, artists and non-artists alike, to see what might happen if they made time to draw every day for a month.

Michelle Alexis Newman is a photographer and mixed media artist based in Los Angeles.

A combination of blog and portfolio, Michelle’s site is a comprehensive showcase of where to find her online as well as giving you a glimpse into her style. There a links to a few of her projects, such as photographic series The North wind blew South (see example above) and Screams (which need little explanation once you’ve browsed the images).
We’ve chosen this image from Nicki MacRae for a number of reasons. Firstly, we thought this photograph of Nicki’s artwork was a perfect way to demonstrate the versatility of the artist, who enjoys photography as well as painting. We also enjoy the texture and shapes that are brought out by the photography.

Nicki says of her work:
“My paintings tend to involve layering, concealing and revealing, enhancing and building. Above most things, I adore colour and texture. I take an instinctive approach when working, often using a wide range of media, employing simple printing techniques and using found objects.”

Energie-Labor – an educational game about energy research

Kate Ivey-Williams is a Social, Service and Experience Designer with a passion for projects that work with people and the environment.

Currently studying on the Masters in European Design program, Kate aims to “to create engaging services with meaningful user experiences for valuable social impact”.

Her blog is a collection of various projects she has undertaken in the past, including the children’s energy research game, Energie-Labor, and Polku, inspired by prints left in the snow.

The importance of design is obvious in each of the projects Kate details on her blog, and yet in none of them does it out weigh the human aspect which is clearly important to the artist. Whether we fully understand what social, service experience design is or not, we think Kate’s blog is very clever & think it should be shared.
