See Chilling Sci-Fi Film Death Watch At ISO

UPDATE: This event is now SOLD OUT.

Watch Glasgow-set sci-fi film-noir Death Watch in the subterranean screening room of Merchant City’s newly renovated ISO HQ building.

The Merchant city features prominently in this cult classic by Bernard Tavernier. Harvey Keitel plays a reporter with a camera implanted in his brain. He secretly records the final days of a terminally ill writer (Romy Schneider), to be broadcast as a form of twisted entertainment. With its satirical prophecy of reality TV, media paranoia, surveillance and celebrity, this chilling film is more appropriate now than ever.

Part of the Merchant City Festival.
Complimentary drinks provided by Heverlee Beer.

Amy describes the process behind her vivid works in paint and ink.

My work is a response to emotion, memory, feeling and observation underpinned by a fascination with man’s relationship to nature and the juxtaposition of nature and modernity. I am interested in the scale and capacity of human thought in relation to, and measured against, nature and how this places us within the world.
I studied at the Edinburgh College of Art from 2001 – 2005 gaining a BA (Hons) degree in Sculpture. I have since been developing my work through drawing and painting and exhibiting extensively throughout Scotland. I am currently based in Crossmichael in Dumfries & Galloway.

Trust This Journey, oil on canvas, 120 x 110cm, 2015-16

I paint with intent, with a working theme in mind that expands and evolves as the work continues. When mark-making I use memory and feeling merged and fused with conscious forms. I usually work on a few pieces at any one time in a variety of scale, oscillating between canvas on the wall or easel, pieces on the floor and sketchbooks on the table. I like the physicality of painting, of mark-making. I enjoy the dialogue between pieces when placed next to each other by accident or intentionally and the thoughts and ideas that protrude from this.

This Island This Edge, ink & gouache on paper, 74 x 57cm, 2015

My recent work focuses on death, loss and transition. I have been exploring this by creating something that I destroy to then create something new. This could be a painting that I cut up to use the pieces as stencils on another painting, creating sections within it that are ‘missing’ but are making up a whole. I am exhibiting a piece from this body of work at the international festival of contemporary art, Cupar Arts Festival, as an invited artist for the LIMINAL group exhibition from 18th – 25th June.

Missing 2, ink on canvas, 120 x 100cm, 2016

In my solo exhibition “Interconnections” at the Gracefield Arts Centre, Dumfries in 2015 I was exploring human relationship to nature through childhood memory, our desire to reconnect coupled with our distance from it. For the exhibition I undertook a residency on the Isle of Eigg with The Bothy Project for which I am doing a talk at The Stove, the artist-led organisation and multi-purpose arts venue, in Dumfries on 23rd June.

Installation views of “Interconnections” 2015

Other exhibitions include “Inscapes”, a solo exhibition at &Collective Gallery in Bridge of Allen earlier this year, “Detritus & Other Stories” solo exhibition at Iota Gallery in Glasgow in 2014, D&G Out group exhibition at James Harvey Gallery in London 2014, Visual Arts Award Restrospective Exhibition at the John Gray Centre in Haddington 2013. I am also currently Chair of Upland, a new and ambitious visual art and craft development organisation in Dumfries & Galloway.

Touring exhibition produced and curated by Alpha-ville reaches Peru for the first time.

New Realities is a touring exhibition produced and curated by London-based creative studio and curatorial agency Alpha-ville. Following its debut at the Mobile World Centre in Barcelona (Oct 2014 – March 2015), the exhibition has travelled to Latin America for the first time this year.

VIDEO TEASER:

The founders and directors Estela Oliva and Carmen Salas tell us about the ideas behind the exhibition and the criteria they’ve used for choosing the work of arts.

Presented in collaboration with Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Lima, New Realities is a project that aims to explores the implications of technology on human behaviour and identity, and how the ever changing nature of the Internet and use of new technologies are bringing about new avenues for creative expression. The exhibition runs until Friday 17 June 2016, free access, all ages.

“It’s been an amazing experience to present the exhibition at Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Lima. They’re doing such a great job, and we found many synergies with what we do here. We’ve worked very closely with them for over a year to adapt the project to their spaces and audiences.” says Carmen Salas.

Through this journey of art, technology and digital creativity, we seek to provide new perspectives on the reality we live, and anticipate the future we are all heading to. A future in which we can decide what role to adopt in order to make a more harmonious place for future generations. The exhibition illustrates a culture of continuous change and complex transformation in which the digital tools we once created are now acting as important agents of change.

New Realities includes the works of 12 contemporary artists and designers featured across three thematic areas. The criteria for selecting the works has been to choose projects that significantly deal with defining questions of this new reality in which we live; artworks that blend artistic research with innovative practices to break boundaries, and foster the development of new disciplines. The artists featured in the exhibition include: Karolina Sobecka, LIA, LaTurbo Avedon, Jan de Coster, Lawrence Lek, Mark Dorf, Quayola, Universal Everything, Ustwo, FIELD, Fabrica and Realität.

For Alpha-ville, it is essential that all technological developments go hand in hand with a critical reflection through research and artistic creation, so that we can deepen the impact and possibilities that these new technologies have on society and culture. This is the message we wanted to convey with New Realities, a concept that is also explained in the Marshall McLuhan’s quote we’ve used in the exhibition text: “artists are always ahead of technology offering us clues to understand the impact these technologies will have later on. “

Emma Nellies of Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art and Design reviews this years offering for the Degree show 2016.

Emma Nellies of Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art and Design reviews this years offering for the Degree Show 2016.

Wandering around the work of this year’s DJCAD graduates before the award plaques go up is a new and somewhat freeing experience. A dauntless spectator may attempt at a few guesses, but this year the work is so varied in media and approach that it’s even difficult to label it under course names; deep reverberating sounds and extensive processes radiate from the Art Philosophy and Contemporary Practice students whilst the Fine Art students’ work oozes complex ideologies. The Time Based Art & Digital Film work is sprinkled throughout the building, granting this year’s Degree Show a cohesive feel that fits well with showcasing such a close knit, collaborative year.

Helen King

In one of the Crawford building’s bright, open rooms, Helen King’s (APCP) immaculate blueprints peek out from behind the massive concrete slab that both greets and blocks you upon entering. Coming to notice how precariously the piece balances causes a tinge of doubt towards the supposedly stable walls around you. Combat this doubt against the blueprints, and they begin to act as a warrant for the Brutal Modernist architecture tropes; old-school, time consuming processes take precedence over new technologies and a long spent thought becomes the documentation and justification of one side of a polarized opinion. The concrete proves itself, standing tall in the foreground.

Sandra Schneider

Juxtapose King’s solid concrete slab with Sandra Schneider’s (Fine Art) evocative study on language; Schneider’s clicking tongue and slow, purposeful poetry fill the room as much as any matter, concrete or human. The vibe is more like a 70s living room and feels like a living, tactile set of a Svankmajer film. Tongues burgeon from the unassuming, floral wallpaper like moulding mushrooms and, although the soft light from the lamp and dark wood may make you feel at home, illusions of puddles and wet patches deter you from taking a seat. The subtly dominating sound of a trickling leak (or ‘bubbly saliva’) give the feel that this room, a metaphor for language itself, is weakened and weakening and the voice plays the part of the foundations and the leak causing all the destruction.

Veera Krouglov

Fulfilling Dundee’s recent appetite for graphic, psychedelic murals, Veera Krouglov’s fun-filled room contains all the characters you would want to meet on a dark night. The life-size doodles and miniature ceramic creatures invoke a childishly mature personality, as though Krouglov has managed to embody the exact behind-the-scenes sensibility of concealed adult humour in a kids TV show.

Sean Forsyth and Ewan T Gibson

Hazel Holloway deploys the term ‘physical empathy’, exploring her bodily self-awareness in restricted material work, and Eve Kerr’s filmed performance ‘Clay Kavala Graha’ displays a metaphoric extraction of artistic intuition through pure material. Shifting from materiality to the screen, ‘Elsewhere’, a beautiful short film by Sean Forsyth (Fine Art) and Ewan T Gibson (TBA), brings forth a celebration of the landscape on our doorstep through the ingenuity of unexpected interaction between a Fox and a Crow. The strong array of films this year is not to be missed on the big screen, showcasing on Wednesday the 25th of May at the DCA.

Kieran Milne and Thomas Stephenson

As far as guessing games go, the RSA Awards are a tough one to call. One room stands out as a tough competitor, housing the work of Kieran Milne and Thomas Stephenson (both Fine Art). On Milne’s side of the room, light streams in from the big old windows into a space as sleek and calm as an office in the Netherlands. Serene tones of Riso green prevail throughout the publications, houseplants and wall pieces, and exit signs act as an invitation for escape through the black kissing gate in the foreground. In Thomas Stephenson’s work, the name ‘wood burning stove’ manifests literally, at first glance beautifully and traditionally constructed, yet a strong satirical warning emanates from within; an uncompromising illustration of the destructive passivity we undertake in the daily living of our lives.

One thing that shines throughout this years’ Degree Show is an unwavering awareness of the artists’ surroundings, into which each work proclaims a corner of it’s own. An undoubtedly outstanding show from the graduates, Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art and Design will keep you roaming for hours. It’s open until the 29th of May and the work’s above are just a small selection from the many, many memorable works on show from the emerging talent that is the class of 2016.

Independent fashion label Graffiti Clothing share some of their favorite things..

Aaron Speed is a self taught artist and fashion designer involved in the regeneration of Glasgow’s historic Barrowlands. He shares some of his personal cultural favorites.

I’m giving it my best go in a tough industry. Been supporting other Scottish brands for the past year as part of our relocation to the Barrowlands for the regeneration of the area.

Getting ready to launch my new label at the end of this year, most of my inspiration comes from Glasgow, taking hard lines of the tower blocks currently being brought down all over the city and turning them into something soft and feminine.

1. Event: Shoot Your Shot – HI-NRG/Italo-Disco/TAKING YOU HIGHER!
One of my favourite club nights, the promoter Bonner is insane in all the good ways. Next party is 27th of May at The Art School.

2. Music: Sofar sounds: While they haven’t happened too often in Glasgow, these secret intimate gigs are pretty relaxed, the extensive acoustic playlists on youtube lets you really explore and discover new artists.

4. Music: Etta Bond – I’ll try not to gush, but I am in love with her sound and attitude. Soulful spoken word and sing speak with a feminist edge, she is out of this world and HAS to be checked out.
