UPDATE: This event is now SOLD OUT.

Watch Glasgow-set sci-fi film-noir Death Watch in the subterranean screening room of Merchant City’s newly renovated ISO HQ building.

The Merchant city features prominently in this cult classic by Bernard Tavernier. Harvey Keitel plays a reporter with a camera implanted in his brain. He secretly records the final days of a terminally ill writer (Romy Schneider), to be broadcast as a form of twisted entertainment. With its satirical prophecy of reality TV, media paranoia, surveillance and celebrity, this chilling film is more appropriate now than ever.

Touring exhibition produced and curated by Alpha-ville reaches Peru for the first time.

New Realities is a touring exhibition produced and curated by London-based creative studio and curatorial agency Alpha-ville. Following its debut at the Mobile World Centre in Barcelona (Oct 2014 – March 2015), the exhibition has travelled to Latin America for the first time this year.

VIDEO TEASER:

The founders and directors Estela Oliva and Carmen Salas tell us about the ideas behind the exhibition and the criteria they’ve used for choosing the work of arts.

Presented in collaboration with Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Lima, New Realities is a project that aims to explores the implications of technology on human behaviour and identity, and how the ever changing nature of the Internet and use of new technologies are bringing about new avenues for creative expression. The exhibition runs until Friday 17 June 2016, free access, all ages.

“It’s been an amazing experience to present the exhibition at Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Lima. They’re doing such a great job, and we found many synergies with what we do here. We’ve worked very closely with them for over a year to adapt the project to their spaces and audiences.” says Carmen Salas.

Through this journey of art, technology and digital creativity, we seek to provide new perspectives on the reality we live, and anticipate the future we are all heading to. A future in which we can decide what role to adopt in order to make a more harmonious place for future generations. The exhibition illustrates a culture of continuous change and complex transformation in which the digital tools we once created are now acting as important agents of change.

New Realities includes the works of 12 contemporary artists and designers featured across three thematic areas. The criteria for selecting the works has been to choose projects that significantly deal with defining questions of this new reality in which we live; artworks that blend artistic research with innovative practices to break boundaries, and foster the development of new disciplines. The artists featured in the exhibition include: Karolina Sobecka, LIA, LaTurbo Avedon, Jan de Coster, Lawrence Lek, Mark Dorf, Quayola, Universal Everything, Ustwo, FIELD, Fabrica and Realität.

For Alpha-ville, it is essential that all technological developments go hand in hand with a critical reflection through research and artistic creation, so that we can deepen the impact and possibilities that these new technologies have on society and culture. This is the message we wanted to convey with New Realities, a concept that is also explained in the Marshall McLuhan’s quote we’ve used in the exhibition text: “artists are always ahead of technology offering us clues to understand the impact these technologies will have later on. “

//BUZZCUT// are Nick Anderson and Rosana Cade, two friends and performance makers who running this performance and live-art festival that happens annually in Glasgow. They are so delighted to be working towards their fifth 5-day festival.

Nick and Rosana tell us what they have in store for 2016.

Jamie Lewis Hadley , Blood on the Streets, 2015

The festival started in 2012 at The Old Hairdressers and has now grown and shifted to The Pearce Institute in Govan. We totally love being at The Pearce Institute as it has been a community centre for over 100 years, and still is! Last year’s festival was a total joy, with about 60 performances ranging from studio performances to durational body-based performances, one-on-one pieces and outdoor work. It will be similar again this year and we can’t wait to invite you in.

The whole festival runs on a ‘pay-what-you-can’ system and you don’t need to book any tickets in advance. There will also be great food served all day from local Govan eatery, Cafe 13! We will be releasing a full brochure with all artist and show info in late March, which you’ll be able to find on our website.

Siriol Joyner, 2015

This year we have particular plans and resource to help absolutely everyone attend and enjoy the festival and we are placing a lot of work into increasing the accessibility of the event. We will have PAs, BSL interpreters and more who are available to help. You can call us on: 07834751536 to speak directly with us about any questions you have.

We always aim for //BUZZCUT// to be a place that you can basically just turn up and be looked after with warmth, inspiration and comfort!

//BUZZCUT// is a collaboration between two artists in Glasgow dedicated to creating exciting, supportive environments for artists and audiences to experiment with live performance.

//BUZZCUT// looks to open up new spaces for performance to happen, to bring new audiences to live art, and to create new opportunities for artists to make and share work.

//BUZZCUT// is about sharing; sharing food, sharing ideas and support, opening up doors and sharing homes.

//BUZZCUT// is about knowing we can be lateral… and actively disobeying hierarchies.

The line-up is always half Scotland-based artists and the other half from across the world. We’re super excited about all the work in the programme and to name just a few, this year includes work from: Nic Green and Tam McGarvey, Mary Coble, Fallope and The Tubes, FK Alexander, Gavin Krastin, Antonija Livingstone and many, many more!

24 hour art laboratory in the stunning Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park

Sanctuary, a unique public art event, is taking place in the stunning landscape of the Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park on 26 September. It’s an outdoor laboratory experimenting with new ways of using technology to explore darkness, light and place.

The Galloway Dark Skies Park is a specially designated area that is low in light pollution and Sanctuary, now in its second year, takes place within the park. Remote, beautiful and mostly ‘electronically dark’, the event is a sanctuary from both light pollution and worldwide connectedness.

Dozens of artists are taking part in creating this 24-hour temporary alternative reality. The work includes installations and site specific interventions, radio broadcasts, voice works, experimental sound and video works, performance, lectures and a live mix of rare 78s.

Co-Curator Jo Hodges says “Sanctuary is a temporary escape into both electronic and optical darkness, a place where artists take control of technology and use it in experimental and creative ways.”

Broken20 by David Coyle

Sanctuary’s ethos is about interactivity and experimentation with works including: Entropy Lure by scientist Graham Rooney and video artist John Wallace which uses thermographic cameras to capture every visitor’s unique heat signature; Nightlight-2 sees artists Carrie Godsiff and Johannes Meyer of Unicorn Diagram setup a shadow catcher; Dark Outside FM is a site specific radio station curated by Stuart McLean (aka Frenchbloke) broadcasting previously unheard sound donated from all round the world; Eternal Silence by Jamie Clements and Nick Millar will use a light to beam people’s final messages to the universe; Enclosure, the event’s signature 100ft circular blue neon light installation, by co-curator Robbie Coleman which last year attracted hundreds of bats. There will be a Sonic Walk to the installation with bat detectors.

Not to be missed will be a talk on the subversive use of modern creative technology, and a marathon 10 hour curated programme of performances, workshops, screenings and improvisations by Glasgow based collective Broken20. It is worth the trip alone to see how much diverse and experimental material a group of individuals can extricate from the relatively open brief of exploring light and dark.

The Turner Prize exhibition comes to Glasgow this Autumn

This Autumn Glasgow welcomes Europe’s most prestigious visual art award. Tramway will host the Turner Prize, organised by Tate with an exhibition of works by the nominated artists: Assemble, Bonnie Camplin, Janice Kerbel and Nicole Wermers.

Assemble group

The Turner Prize is awarded to a British artist under the age of 50 for an outstanding exhibition in the preceding year. Introducing us to new artists and ideas in contemporary art, previous winners include Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry and Gillian Wearing.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive programme of workshops, talks, tours and activities for people of all ages to get involved and be inspired by the creativity on show.

Given how many artists from Glasgow have made up the Turner Prize shortlists over recent years, it is great to have the Prize on show in Tramway, which feels like a natural home for the Prize this year.
- Dr Penelope Curtis, Director, Tate Britain

The winner of the prize will be announced on 7 December 2015.

Visit Tramway from 1 October 2015 – 17 January 2016 to see the show for free.
