What could we have as our Facebook, Google+ & Twitter cover images? How could we possibly come up with something as good as any of the work produced by the brilliantly talented community of creatives we have at Central Station? Hang on a minute…

We’re giving you the opportunity to be Central Station’s ambassador, with the unmissable top spot on all of our social pages. Every month we’ll change the image and choose from a previously featured work to find the next “face” of Central Station. All images will be credited to the artist and there’ll be a link to the original featured work spot on our website.

To be considered, just follow us on Behance, Cargo Collective, Flickr and/or Vimeo.
What:
Albert Drive Project aims to creatively engage with the residents, communities, businesses and families living on the drive in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow. The project is all about participation and actively getting to know each other. It will culminate in an event in July 2013. The project is led by Pollokshields based theatre company Glas(s) Performance in partnership with Tramway.

They will also work with artists in residence and are currently looking for applications for 2013. See more information about the available residencies here.

Why we like it:
Each week, Albert Drive will profile one of their neighbours. This is a unique and fun way to get to know people in the area.

Flamingo is a London-based culture and illustration magazine that celebrates doing-it-yourself.

Flamingo is a London-based culture and illustration magazine that celebrates doing-it-yourself. Investigating alternative lifestyles, we believe that creativity, community and grassroots culture are some of the most fascinating things in life.

Our third issue, which was out 16 April, celebrates something we feel especially strongly about – our home towns and habitats. Our home helps to define who we are; it’s the centre of our world. More than just where we lay our heads at night, home is where we feel safe, and is a place that – to a certain extent, at least – can offer us happiness. When comfort and peace is found in our environment, it provides the perfect conditions to make and create.

Encouraging interaction as a whole, the magazine’s publishing house – The Flamingo Arts Project – encompasses a diverse range of projects including art curation, workshops and publishing. This gives us a chance to get away from our computer screens and get into the real world, which is nice.

Exhibitions of work by members of our community you can see at this year's GI festival

We’ve given you our list of exhibitions that are slightly under the radar at the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2012, now we bring you events happening during the festival by members of Central Station. Some are part of the official programme, some aren’t, but all of them are recommended by us because they are showcasing our community.

Grab your calendar and take notes as we bring you our Top 5 Central Station during GI2012:

This installation is the result of a collaborative project involving the creation of approximately twenty record cover artworks created by a wide range of Scottish artists, each of whom have a strong interest in or connection to music making; artists who have been in bands, who DJ, or who use music as a theme in their art making practice.
An exhibition by first year Masters students from Valand School of Fine Arts, Gothenburg, Sweden. Field Office combines a space for showing work and a place for doing work. With an understanding of a field office functioning as an outpost for a series of explorations, conducted as fieldwork within the city, it serves as platform for a series of individual and collaborative art works and events, surveying, passing through and engaging with Glasgow. Coinciding with the Glasgow International Festival, the project connects with this event while also extending into Glasgow’s local art scene.

Nothing About Us Without Us Is For Us
A public art event using obsolete technology to hurl language across Glasgow’s river Clyde. Led by Matt Baker & t s Beall, as part of Glasgow International Festival Visual Art 2012. It’s described as a sort of action / happening / community celebration / anti-festival. It is preceded by lots of workshops and tours that involve different groups of folk and institutions in and around Govan. There are around 20 workshops and events in total – some of which are organised for specific groups, and others which are open to the public. See the individual event listings here.
20 Apr – 1 May | See site for specific events | Around Govan

Tell us about any shows, exhibitions, gigs, things of interest that you have on during GI 2012. It doesn’t have to be on the “official” GI2012 programme to grab our attention.

The Ride Out 15 April 2010

Woke up to perfect weather, that rare moment in Glasgow where it is just what you wanted, odd patches of cloud and sun and a gentle breeze. Spring has well and truly sprung. Down to Kelvingrove Park and all the white bikes are arrayed in a perfect circle round the fountain. It’s a stunning opening image, without anyone there. As we approach the set off point there are more and more cyclists turning up, with all sorts of ingenious systems to film the ride out. One woman has ten cameras strapped to the front of her bike, people have head cams and mobile phones. There will be a huge amount of footage…I’m fascinated to see how it will all cut together.

The ride out starts up Sauchiehall St and the pace is perfect, leisurely and slow and 200 odd bikes fill most of the road, so you can do that thing you never normally do in the city, have a conversation. It is incredibly relaxed. The only sound is the ringing of different bells on each bike, a tinkling backdrop. We arrive at George Square too quickly. I really wanted the pleasure of riding on mass through the city to last forever, it was tantalisingly short.

In the square, there is an old abandoned Peugot bike hanging ready to be painted white, I go for it with a vengeance and the original Provo anarchist white bikes manifesto is read out in dutch by Alexandros (brilliant gutteral voice) and the english translation by Peter McCaughey in his best Omagh accent. There is a great atmosphere and at one point as we present the white bike plan, people lift their bikes above their heads. It felt like a genuine homage to the original and I look forward to some of the original Dutch anarchists seeing footage and pictures and how they will feel to see their visionary ideas take flight again nearly half a century on.

It’s been a strong start to Glasgow International Festival and particularily the prominence given to non-gallery based contemporary practice that works with event, performative action, site-response, evocation and re-enactment. Its also been two years since we made a live work and this was a great way to start again.
