Providing a platform for ideas and supporting artists and writers is what the artist-run zine, CANNED is all about.

CANNED is a biannual, artist run magazine of contemporary art and critical dialogue.

CANNED was founded in 2011 by Iris Priest and Rory Biddulph in order to provide a platform for the exchange and enlargement of ideas and to support emerging artists and writers in their career progression both regionally and nationally. As such, issues to do with community, dialogue and reciprocity are important both to the CANNED founding intent and ongoing aspirations. For the most recent edition, ISSUE 3 we invited an open discourse on these themes, collaborating with artists, writers and critics to facilitate a wide, diverse and at times challenging examination of the perceived role of art in the contemporary context.

The CANNED programme has extended to the facilitation of real life events and exchanges from our work with basic.fm (the online radio station of art and culture), to one-off projects such as Peinture Abstraite – a collaboration between NewBridge artists Thomas Whittle and Holly Watson with the Swedish artist Jacob Dahlgren, culminating in the exclusive CANNED 3 centrefold and a thoughtful essay by Watson. Similarly in May 2012 CANNED hosted the three-day long event A NewBridge Enquiry. Devised and curated by the artists Andrew Wilson and Toby Lloyd A NewBridge Enquiry generated a wealth of critique, conversations and exchanges between artists, the public and other interested bodies. Some of these conversations – encompassing conflicting opinions and perspectives on the social efficacy of art – were then continued in ISSUE 3 through the four-way discursive essay A NewBridge Enquiry: the Politics of Participation and the Act of Invitation.

This approach to generating content and challenging, far-reaching discourse is something which the CANNED team hope to advance in future publications through collaborations both within the region and beyond to other national and international artists, writers and institutions.

CANNED are currently looking for submissions for ISSUE IV –The Politics of Representation, see details here.

This September a new kind of art fair will be seen in Liverpool. CAVE is all about supporting emerging artists.

Alex Hetherington

What:
This September Liverpool will play host to CAVE – a new and unique model of art fair.

Housed in Baltic Creative’s new Campus building, CAVE will give visitors the opportunity to discover the work of 45 of the UK’s most dynamic and currently unrepresented artists, offering the opportunity to buy work at a price to suit any budget. What makes CAVE unique is its focus on the artist with the organisers taking no commission or exhibition fees; the full sale price of each art work will go directly to the artist.

Y Morals by James McLardy

Coinciding with the opening of the Liverpool Biennial 2012, CAVE will run from 13 – 16 September, existing independently of but alongside the festival. CAVE aims to give emerging artists an ambitious sales & exhibition platform and the opportunity to engage with wide audiences. Playing on it’s independent position; CAVE is exhibiting some of the most exciting art being produced in the UK today. Painting, drawing, sculpture and film will exist alongside performative encounters, secret talks and urban shamanic rituals.

Oliver Braid

CAVE, the brainchild of Flis Mitchell and Kevin Hunt (artists and curators based at The Royal Standard in Liverpool) was born out of a desire to create a commercial platform for emerging and unrepresented artists during the Biennial, something that has never happened before. CAVE supports the very best creative talent the UK has to offer, removes gallery mediation, and creates a dialogue directly between the artist and the buyer; stimulating the local and wider regional art markets within the UK.

Tom Nolan

Flis explained “We feel that the time is right for something different, an ambitious and exciting commercial addition at the time of the festival.”

Kevin added “People will be able to buy something bespoke, hand-made and original, for less than many factory-produced blips consumed on the high street, engaging directly, with the artists who made the work.”

When:
CAVE Art Fair runs from 13 – 16 September 2012 at Baltic Creative Campus, Liverpool.

The Fruitmarket Gallery is internationally-recognised. Find out more...

The Fruitmarket Gallery is a publicly-funded contemporary art gallery of national and international significance, and is Scotland’s leading contemporary art space. It has an internationally-recognised creative programme and a loyal and ever-increasing audience.

The Gallery’s principal aim is to make contemporary art accessible without compromising art or underestimating audiences, and it presents world-class, thought-provoking and challenging exhibitions of contemporary art made by both Scottish and international artists. The 2012 Festival exhibition concentrates on the theme of the diary in the work of Dieter Roth. Roth was one of late twentieth century art’s major figures, and although he died in 1998, his work remains of interest to artists and audiences alike. He has a particular connection to Edinburgh, having been part of Richard Demarco’s exhibition Strategy Get Arts at the 1970 International Festival. This will be the first time his work has been seen in Scotland since.

The Gallery is also home to Scotland’s leading contemporary culture bookshop and a busy café making fresh, tasty lunches and delicious cakes. The Gallery sits neatly behind Edinburgh’s Waverley Station and is close to many bus routes and the Royal Mile, North Bridge, Waverley Bridge and Princes Street.

Visit the Fruitmarket Gallery’s website here and follow them on Twitter and Facebook. Also check out their Youtube Channel which has some great archive films of Artists’ and Curators’ talks.

Catalyst Arts is an artist-led organisation situated in the heart of Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Since its inception in 1993 – formed in response to what was seen as a cultural vacuum – the gallery continues to be run by a group of voluntary directors on a two-year rolling basis. Through its dynamic and challenging programming Catalyst supports young and emerging local talent, often showcasing new names alongside established and international artists. Over the years Catalyst has continually promoted contemporary art practices in Belfast, and serves as a training ground for artists, curators and arts administrators.

Catalyst Arts is a non-profit organisation supported by a large members base and holds an annual member’s show, giving all its members a chance to showcase their work in the gallery.

Upcoming exhibitions:

Vicinity
22nd March – 13th April 2012
Vicinity is a group exhibition investigating temporary, adaptable and
transitory methods for exploring Belfast city. Artists will work in an
engaged manner, using the mile radius of the gallery as a starting
point to make new work in the gallery and at off-site locations.

The gallery is situated at 5 College Court, Belfast BT1 6BS and opens Tuesday to Saturday, 11am – 5pm.

For more details about past, present and future exhibitions and opportunities, or to become a member, please visit Catalyst website or visit the gallery on Facebook.

Audioscores was created by Chris Fulton and Paul Baddiley whose musical backgrounds compliment one another. Merging backgrounds in main stream Pop, Rock and Blues with Contemporary Classical Orchestration, they create music containing both modern and traditional elements. With Paul enjoying emotive orchestral scores and Chris’s digital and acoustic elements, together they can produce music in a wide range of genres. Paul graduated in Music from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2004 and Chris from Music and Music Technology at Huddersfield University in 2008. Their most recent request is for a feature film in New York.
