It contains classic and contemporary, hand-picked from our festivals, cultural programme and the BFI National Archive. The site works on desktops, android and apple devices with a downloadable app from iTunes.

You can choose from thousands of beautifully preserved films, documenting 120 years of Britain on Film all searchable on an interactive map. If you only have 5 minutes, why not watch footage from BFI’s Film Festival such as Director Peter Strickland and editor Nick Fenton’s Q&A on Björk: Biophilia Live, 2014. Alternatively if you’ve got a bit more time, try a more recent feature such as Appropriate Behaviour, 2015 by Director and star Desiree Akhavan which is a comedy about a bisexual Iranian-American woman.

With so many films to choose from, the BFI have helpfully created a Collections sub-menu which helps direct you to your perfect playlist. They include exclusive features about the films or the people who made them. Collections include Hitchock where you can view classics like The Birds or Psycho for £2.98 or watch Martin Scorsese discuss Vertigo for free.

Why we like it:
Blast Theory is innovative and has a strong track record of taking major artistic risks – in Kidnap (1998), for example two members of the public were kidnapped as part of a lottery and the resulting event was streamed online. They have tackled themes of violence, pornography and politics.

A Machine To See With (2010) commission from the Sundance Film Festival, 01 San Jose Biennial and the Banff New Media Institute

In Blast Theory’s film, A Machine To See With (2010) participants play the lead in a heist. Participants signed up online with their mobile phone numbers. On the day, they received an automated call giving them an address to go to. From there, a series of calls instructed participants through the city, they hid money inside public lavatories on the way, met up with a partner in crime and onwards to the bank, the tension rising. This seems like an utterly unique experience as it’s up to the individual participants to deal with the bank robbery and its aftermath.

What:
Aperture, a very busy not-for-profit foundation, is a multi-platform publisher connecting photographers and their audiences with the most inspiring work and the best ideas.

Aperture magazine publishes four issues each year and these are filled with the most inspiring photography and writing on photography. They also publish between twelve and fifteen new photobooks, and books about photography, each year, with a growing digital publishing program, including e-books, apps, and a daily blog, as well as online features on their website. They have thus far published over 650 books.

Additionally, they have a regular program of exhibitions each year, at their gallery in New York and at partner venues, touring to museums and other photography centers nationally and internationally. In their shop, Aperture sell approximately twenty-five print editions each year, many by emerging photographers, aimed at collectors and published to support their programs, and the photographers they work with.

Why we like it:
As if all that was not enough, Aperture host an annual Portfolio Prize, recognizing and promoting the most exciting emerging photographers internationally, and Paris Photo, an annual PhotoBook Award recognizing the contribution of photographers’ books.

With the hyper-competitiveness of the Olympics upon us, we are seeing moments of striving and failing played out in front of us again and again. AND 2012 is about the subtlety, humour, vulnerability and tenacity of such moments.

Mobile Republic: Digital Caravans | The Center for Genomic Gastronomy | Friday 10 August – Sunday 09 September

During a kaleidoscopic five days, unlikely monuments will be inflated, failed technological dreams will be resurrected and extinct industries will be salvaged and rebuilt. A mirror will be held up to celebrity culture and the shirked responsibility of the financial crash.

Alongside this are a number of events that focus on self-improvement, be it workshops to enhance your charisma, makeovers to prepare you for the world post-2012, or participatory work – live and online – ready to solve all your problems.

Overall, the programme is as much about finished exhibitions as it is about work evolving over time. It is about artists experimenting and setting ambitious parameters. It is about creating the kind of cacophonous late-night actions and events that AND has striven for since its inception.

We want to offer rich counterpoints to perfection, undermine accepted logic and find alternative ways of being.

Only the question remains: Are you big enough to fail?

An audio-visual stop motion delight by  ftjelly (aka Lu Sisi) – that’s how we’d describe today’s featured work.

Here is what Lu Sisi has to say about the work:
“This stopmotion animation is an iteration of my working process, in which I create the audio and the visuals simultaneously. The images are abstracted to relate to the process of how I create sound, in that in music, a sample is created and then edited and sampled again. I wanted to share a technical connection between how I create sound and visuals. The mechanical aspect of the machines is kept and enhanced to contrast the age of the machines with that of the digital projection.”
