Untitled, 2013 – Stephen Iles

As part of The Tetley’s opening programme, A New Reality: Part 3, documentary photographer Stephen Iles will show a series of new works which chronicle The Tetley’s conversion. The exhibition, entitled Between Space, will be on display until 17 August. From office block to contemporary art space, Iles’ work explores the spaces where art is shown or made, examining the interim time between exhibitions and shifting moments that occur during re-development. Objects that initially appear unconnected are paired with the places they inhabit:

“Concentrating upon their transitional states of flux, Iles uses photography as a mirror to point back at the art-world like an endless reflection. Using each site as his laboratory or studio, Iles builds a surface tension questioning how we see and understand art and its’ spaces. Steeped in conversations surrounding the history of art and most notably the Arte Povera movement, Iles’ allows the specific location to become irrelevant, instead seeking to reactivate the space by searching for the moments in-between.”

See Between Space at The Tetley until 17 August. For details of the exhibition, see the Tetley’s website.

An exhibition by London based artists, Sam Belinfante & Simon Lewandowski

The Reversing Machine is an exhibition by London based artists, Sam Belinfante and Simon Lewandowski. It was originally commissioned in 2012 by Art Laboratory Berlin as part of their ‘Time and Technology’ series.

For their contribution to A New Reality at the Tetley, Belinfante and Lewandowski reconstruct their collective work, incorporating fresh elements in response to the singular space of the new venue. They have also developed individual works of their own which reflect on their collaboration and on the concerns that generated The Reversing Machine.

The Reversing Machine itself is a self-reversing mechanical power source. As the machine is powered, any objects attached turn at a steady rate for a set time then stop and quickly start to turn in the opposite direction for the same amount of time – a mechanical palindrome. This sequence is controlled by the mechanics of the device and is transparent to the viewer; showing its own workings.

A repertoire of devices driven by The Reversing Machine act out ways in which we are able to perceive the flow and passage of time through the action of things and forces in the world. Devices choreographed by the machine include adapted record players, household light fittings, slide projectors and a variety of sculptural automata.

Central to the installation is a pair of turntables driven by the Machine with a shelf of vinyl records from which visitors can select a disc to play on the turntables. This is the ‘Palindrone Jukebox’. The records are compositions selected from an open submission.

The exhibition runs until 28 February 2014 at The Tetley, Leeds.

White Cloth Gallery is a new space for photography and film in the City of Leeds.

Brainchild of creative directors Peter Dench and Sharon Price, the White Cloth Gallery aims to become a focal point for photography and film in the City of Leeds and the centre of a new city-wide arts network. Providing a cultural platform upon which established and upcoming artists can exhibit their work, White Cloth is a new and exciting venture and the first of its kind in the region.

Since opening, White Cloth gallery has exhibited an array of prestigious photographers including works by the acclaimed Jocelyn Bain Hogg and Chris Floyd.

White Cloth gallery is currently exhibiting Peter Dench’s ‘England Uncensored’ which started in July and will be running till 1 October 2012. ‘England Uncensored’ is a warts and all account of real England by celebrated photojournalist, Peter Dench. During a summer of British celebrations, the exhibition provides a geographical and socially unrestricted tour around England, covering themes of love, ethnicity, style, gastronomy and (of course) the weather.

Running from 4 October 2012 for nine weeks, Ewen Spencer’s exhibition, ‘Teenagers’ will be the next exhibition to follow in the success of previous works. Spencer, whose seminal shots of Channel 4’s award-winning Skins cast gained him nationwide acknowledgment in 2007, is set to unveil a series of photographs examining what it means to be young in 21st century Britain. This insightful exhibition captures the awkward moments of adolescence that are familiar to so many of us.

White Cloth Gallery is also home to the WCG fully licensed café and bar – a cool and vibrant urban retreat serving up tasty snacks for those looking to enjoy the exhibitions as well as those just looking to grab a drink or a bite to eat.

White Cloth Gallery can be found at Aireside House, Leeds, LS1 4HT next to Leeds City station.

No Culture Icons is Leeds based independent professional film lab and Arts collective.

No Culture Icons is Leeds based independent professional film lab and Arts collective.

No Culture Icons started purely as a collective. It was a place to share and highlight young and emerging photographers, as well as already established ones. Essentially it was somewhere for us to show a wider audience the work of photographers we enjoyed and drew influence from.

The larger idea of a collective combined with the Film Lab came about later when the photo lab Liam was working in closed down and we acquired some of the equipment. As well as wanting to use it for our own purposes it seemed logical to offer the services to other photographers. As film photography was turning into a much more seldom practiced trade it was harder to find affordable labs who knew exactly what photographer’s requirements were. We tried to fill the gap by offering our services to others. The lab has been going for only 2 or 3 months so far, and it has been hectic, and we’ve learned a lot! The idea arose from wanting to give something back to the photographic community we are involved in and want to preserve.

This year should be an exciting one we have various projects on the horizon for both the collective and also for the film lab side of things: Our first exhibition is in the works, where we will be showcasing work of photographers we’ve discovered through the lab and also people who we have looked up to throughout our photographic journey. We are also working on a zine which will highlight work of amateurs who we have discovered through the collective and from having developed their images in the film lab.

As for the Film Lab, we’re going to be adding E6 (slide film processing) to our services and have also recently acquired a printer so we will be able to offer all of the services you’d expect from a photographic lab.
