Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund 2013 Winner, Lu Sisi explains his project...

Sky Arts Ignition Winners 2013 (middle: Lu Sisi)

Lu Sisi is one of five creatives to have recently been awarded the £30k Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund (run in partnership with IdeasTap). Here, he gives us a brief insight into his winning project idea…

I’m a digital artist originally from China, I graduated in Visual Communications at the Glasgow School of Art in 2011. I have been working in different areas between visuals, sound and live performance.

Since I graduated from GSA, I have been a London based freelancer working in different areas, such as moving image, composing and graphic design. The reason I applied for the Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund is because I want to keep focusing on my own projects rather then doing commercial work everyday.

The project is called The Age of Digital/Analogue, the basic premise allows me to travel throughout the UK, going to different locations to observe old analogue industrial machines, I then record the sounds and videos from each of them, the footage and sound are used to produce an album with a live set performance. The outcome will present itself as a body of work that is part-digital part – analogue. I see this as a combination of film clips (digital) that becomes a part of a live performance (analogue). My approach is one that could be described as a hybrid of various disciplines, whereby I design the visuals, the music and the atmosphere.

I can’t wait wait to start the project! You can follow its progress here.

Stop motion animation by ftjelly (aka Lu Sisi)

An audio-visual stop motion delight by ftjelly (aka Lu Sisi) – that’s how we’d describe today’s featured work.

Here is what Lu Sisi has to say about the work:
“This stopmotion animation is an iteration of my working process, in which I create the audio and the visuals simultaneously. The images are abstracted to relate to the process of how I create sound, in that in music, a sample is created and then edited and sampled again. I wanted to share a technical connection between how I create sound and visuals. The mechanical aspect of the machines is kept and enhanced to contrast the age of the machines with that of the digital projection.”

Lu Sisi‘s short film Digital Analogue

Design agency Intercity have asked Central Station to nominate a piece of artwork which encapsulates the concept of ‘Inspired Ingenuity’.

In partnership with Havana Club they are working on a competition which challenges creative practitioners to turn the everyday into something special (inspired by the spirit of the Habaneros; the people of Havana, who pride themselves on their ability to create what they need
using simple resources). The competition is themed Inspired Ingenuity and runs over 6 months with a winner picked each month and a trip to Cuba up for grabs at the end (find out more here).

Central Station member LU Sisi’s video, Digital Analogue immediately came to mind. Entirely made through stop motion animation and with a soundtrack composed from the noises made by antique cameras, the film represents a technical accomplishment in itself. It also offers food for thought on our contemporary relationship with analogue and digital media.

It certainly fulfils what we believe to be both inspirational and ingenious.
