Future Positive is an online platform to discover creative talent curated by Jakub Michalski and Igor Termenon. At the heart of each of our projects, there are creative individuals who went against the tide of conformity and followed their instinct to try something different. We want to showcase some of the most ambitious and innovative ideas out there, and hope they will inspire others to start their own projects.

Book: The Monocle Guide to Better Living is the newest addition to our bookshelf and we read it anytime we need some inspiration. We’re fans of the magazine and the book hasn’t disappointed us at all!

Magazine: We’re addicted to magazines so it’s really difficult to pick just one, but we really like the first issue of Intern, which just arrived in our mailbox a couple of days ago. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the first issue celebrates the work of interns in the creative industries and showcases the work of future talent.

Cafe: Brew Lab in Edinburgh is one of our favourite coffee shops in the city – the team there is very passionate about coffee and you can feel the love in every cup.

Artist: We recently bought a collage by London-based Polish artist & curator Beata Wilczek. She has really interesting aesthetics and we love how she mixes different techniques and materials.

Illustrator: We discovered the work of Chinese illustrator Oamul earlier this year and we met him in Edinburgh just a couple of weeks ago while he was visiting the country. He’s really talented and we love the ideas he comes up with for his GIFs.

Film: Gary Hustwit’s documentaries are a great source of inspiration. We especially like Objectified although we recommend any of his work.

Co-Editor, Sofia Niazi gives an insight into new zine, OOMK

ISSUE 1 – cover page

One of My Kind (OOMK) is a highly visual, handcrafted small-press publication whose content largely pivots upon the imaginations, creativity and spirituality of women. The goal of the publication is to recognise and highlight the thoughts and opinions of interesting and inspirational women.

ISSUE 1 – page 14

OOMK contains articles, interviews and artworks from a diverse range of emerging creative and activist artists, bloggers and writers. The founders of OOMK are particularly interested in highlighting the work and creative practices of women, who like themselves, are Muslim. Articles focus on issues surrounding feminism, culture, identity and community.

ISSUE 1 – page 15

In terms of its aesthetics and content, OOMK is starkly different from typical women’s magazines, pages are minimal with gently handcrafted touches and there is no trace of any sort of style advice, gossip or weight loss tips.

ISSUE 1 – page 22

Editors of OOMK Sofia Niazi, Sabba Khan and Rose Nordin, said:
‘We feel very strongly about creativity and visual communication and the part is has to play in communicating and raising awareness about issues that are important to us but don’t seem to find a clear or strong voice in the mainstream. As Muslims we’re constantly being talked about and talked at, we think its important that as individuals and as a community we start to become more articulate in expressing what we think, feel and believe, and being able to communicate this both visually and through writing.’

ISSUE 1 – page 23

‘We’re not just interested in projecting Muslim viewpoints or Muslim artists though, we’re excited about learning and collaborating with lots of different people both creatively and in terms of sharing and discussing how we relate to issue like feminism, identity, community and religion. Amongst the activist and feminist community we find that with regards to many issues, we share the same concerns, we want to contribute to and support actions that will raise awareness of these concerns and help bring about change.‘

ISSUE 1 – page 40

Issue 1 includes work by Betsy Greer, Hana Tajima, Hannah Habibi Hopkin, Rachael Dadd, Rukia Begum, Reena Makwana, Huda Khaireh, Ceri May and many more.

ISSUE 1 – page 41

OOMK will initially be published on a bi-annual basis. Issues can be purchased via the magazine’s website and is available to buy in specialist retail outlets.

Andy McColgan from Racket Racket discusses his online zine which showcases music, film, fashion, design and more

Founder of Racket Racket, Andy McColgan details the origins of his website.

I decided to set up Racket Racket in the early part of the summer of 2011 after a bit of an epiphany moment on a long car drive from London to Glasgow, when the whole concept for it became very succinct in my mind. It was at that point that it all fell into place, I suppose. The fact that I didn’t have ‘a blog’ had been niggling away at me for the best part of the last ten years and I had always, maybe somewhat ambitiously, hoped that when the time did come it would be something more thought out, considered and expansive than your average music blog, something less ephemeral and throwaway than much of what exists out there already and something distinctly different from your average contemporary online music magazine.

I took inspiration and education from my time as station manager at Radio Magnetic (a truly invaluable three years of experience) and also from a handful of websites and blogs I had been frequenting regularly for years, London based Test Pressing being one particularly strong influence. The concept I defined in my head during that long journey home was to establish an online magazine which would act as an outlet for me to share and explore my own, fairly niche, interests and obsessions in terms of music (and to a lesser extent art, design and film) as well as the interests and obsessions of certain key people who have specific and idiosyncratic tastes which I trust implicitly – many based in Glasgow but many from further afield. The name I chose essentially means ‘an illegitimate organisation making an extremely loud noise’ – the Racket Racket.

On the site, since launching in Dec 2011, there have been articles and features from some notable and respected cultural voices including JD Twitch, DJ Dribbler, Douglas MacIntyre, Bruce Morton, Stuart Cosgrove, Neil Macdonald, David Barbrossa, James Pole, Brian Sweeney, Paul Benedict Henderson, Jennifer McColgan and Alan Bissett. As I mentioned earlier, all of these people have tastes, opinions and viewpoints that I respect and value hugely. The aim or manifesto, if you like, is to explore ‘alternative pop culture’ from through the decades and around the world. Most of the content on Racket Racket is music-focussed simply because that’s my first love and has been my major personal preoccupation since I was about 7 or 8 years old. And especially, although not exclusively, it’s music from the past and from the peripheries. Mixes, documentary videos, interviews and features make up the majority of the posts so far and there will be lots more of all of those things in 2013. Because that’s what floats my boat.

Some of the most popular articles of the past year have included JD Twitch‘s conversation with legendary UK dub producer Adrian Sherwood, Douglas MacIntyre’s Run Run Run series, DJ Dribbler’s account of a rave at The Tramway in 1989, Brian Sweeney’s Happy Mondays Texts, Stuart Cosgrove’s two part social history of the Zoot Suit in the USA; and interviews with Stuart Leath, Peaking Lights, Ken McCluskey, Albion Venables and Django Django have all gone down rather well too.

One particular area I’m going to be focusing on in the new year is the ‘mix‘ side of things. In doing so, showcasing and promoting DJs and vinyl collectors and enthusiasts around the world who I admire deeply and who, perhaps, go a little unnoticed on the larger and more mainstream online music platforms. I think it’s really important to give these people the exposure they deserve as well as providing a place, in Racket Racket, for local DJs I’m a fan of to show off corners of their record collections that they don’t often get the opportunity to. The music they listen to at home rather than what they would be expected to play in a nightclub on a Saturday night. The weirder and more experimental the better, really. And also we’ll be starting a regular feature ‘spotlight’ (for want of a better term) on independent record shops, again, around the world: Monorail, Rubadub, Underground Solush’n, Redlight Records, Growing Bin, Piccadilly, Sounds of the Universe and so on and so forth. So, there is basically lots of exciting stuff to look forward to next year!

Before that though, Racket Racket has just reached the ripe old age of one and I’ve organised a free party on Friday 28 December at The Brunswick Hotel, Glasgow to celebrate. This will be the third free party we’ve hosted since launching, with each one showcasing three of our favourite local DJs in the intimate and sweaty basement environs of the Brunswick; and they’ve all been really successful nights. David Barbarossa, James Pole, Brian D’Souza, DJ Dribbler, Pro Vinylist Karim and Dirty Larry all deserve a special mention for their huge efforts with the first two parties. For this one – our Christmas-come-first birthday party – we are totally thrilled and excited to have Optimo’s JD Twitch, Hot Mess’s Simonotron and Racket Racket site designer and my girlfriend, Denise (AKA Din Daa Daa) playing the dance records from 9pm till 2am. If you’re free and in Glasgow on the 28 it should be a fantastic night.

Looking forward to the year ahead you can expect to see, as I have touched upon already, regular exclusive mixes and features, articles, interviews and short videos as well as (all going well) a slightly more adventurous event or two consolidating and encapsulating the ethos of the site’s content in ‘the real world’. A site redesign is scheduled for the early part of the new year which will make more of the archive of content on the site already and how that’s presented to the user. All of that as well as Issue 2 of our side project, the So & So fanzine – a physical zine dedicated to the creative musical endeavours and projects happening in the city of Glasgow – which was featured on Central Station back in July, 2012.

I am sincerely grateful to everyone who has been encouraging and supportive over the last year as well as to everyone who has contributed. And hope you continue to approve of the racket we, the racket, are trying to make.

They Magazine is a dialogue between literature and art. Each issue has a unique design and features stories from different authors centered around one unifying thought. We have recently released our fourth issue, The Los Angeles Catalogue, which features short stories from Jason Parham, Jenn Frank, and Cian O’Day.

They is located in Los Angeles and was founded by designer Marshall Rake and myself, Azita Rasoli and started in 2010 as a side project. As it progressed we started getting a little more serious about our content and began involving other people to contribute short stories. We’re always collaborating and really appreciate everyone involved in making this zine so fun to work on!

Triple Canopy is an online magazine, workspace, and platform who aim to slow down the internet.

What:
Triple Canopy is an online magazine, workspace, and platform with clear objectives: that it can be read, really read, online with art that can be looked at for more than a few seconds where small and large ideas are given the time to make their case.

Triple Canopy is dedicated to slowing down the Internet. This begins with their cleverly-designed interface which encourages prolonged, focused engagement.

Working collaboratively with writers, artists, researchers, designers, and developers, Triple Canopy facilitates projects that engage the Internet’s specific characteristics as a public forum with its own evolving practices of reading and viewing, and modes of interaction.

Why we like it:
With great articles like international art language and downloadable podcasts, it’s difficult not to spend all day on this site.

Aperture is a very busy multi-platform publisher with a focus on photography, creating magazines, books, exhibitions and events.

What:
Aperture, a very busy not-for-profit foundation, is a multi-platform publisher connecting photographers and their audiences with the most inspiring work and the best ideas.

Aperture magazine publishes four issues each year and these are filled with the most inspiring photography and writing on photography. They also publish between twelve and fifteen new photobooks, and books about photography, each year, with a growing digital publishing program, including e-books, apps, and a daily blog, as well as online features on their website. They have thus far published over 650 books.

Aperture 208 Magazine, Fall 2012

Additionally, they have a regular program of exhibitions each year, at their gallery in New York and at partner venues, touring to museums and other photography centers nationally and internationally. In their shop, Aperture sell approximately twenty-five print editions each year, many by emerging photographers, aimed at collectors and published to support their programs, and the photographers they work with.

Why we like it:
As if all that was not enough, Aperture host an annual Portfolio Prize, recognizing and promoting the most exciting emerging photographers internationally, and Paris Photo, an annual PhotoBook Award recognizing the contribution of photographers’ books.

Aperture 208 Magazine, Fall 2012

Aperture are celebrating their sixtieth anniversary in 2012 with exhibitions, publications and a Gala. See here for more details.

Providing a platform for ideas and supporting artists and writers is what the artist-run zine, CANNED is all about.

CANNED is a biannual, artist run magazine of contemporary art and critical dialogue.

CANNED was founded in 2011 by Iris Priest and Rory Biddulph in order to provide a platform for the exchange and enlargement of ideas and to support emerging artists and writers in their career progression both regionally and nationally. As such, issues to do with community, dialogue and reciprocity are important both to the CANNED founding intent and ongoing aspirations. For the most recent edition, ISSUE 3 we invited an open discourse on these themes, collaborating with artists, writers and critics to facilitate a wide, diverse and at times challenging examination of the perceived role of art in the contemporary context.

The CANNED programme has extended to the facilitation of real life events and exchanges from our work with basic.fm (the online radio station of art and culture), to one-off projects such as Peinture Abstraite – a collaboration between NewBridge artists Thomas Whittle and Holly Watson with the Swedish artist Jacob Dahlgren, culminating in the exclusive CANNED 3 centrefold and a thoughtful essay by Watson. Similarly in May 2012 CANNED hosted the three-day long event A NewBridge Enquiry. Devised and curated by the artists Andrew Wilson and Toby Lloyd A NewBridge Enquiry generated a wealth of critique, conversations and exchanges between artists, the public and other interested bodies. Some of these conversations – encompassing conflicting opinions and perspectives on the social efficacy of art – were then continued in ISSUE 3 through the four-way discursive essay A NewBridge Enquiry: the Politics of Participation and the Act of Invitation.

This approach to generating content and challenging, far-reaching discourse is something which the CANNED team hope to advance in future publications through collaborations both within the region and beyond to other national and international artists, writers and institutions.

CANNED are currently looking for submissions for ISSUE IV –The Politics of Representation, see details here.

No Thoughts Magazine features photography in glossy printed pages from the US

Founder Michael J DeMeo gives us an insight into No Thoughts Magazine.

No Thoughts Magazine is a photo book disguised as a magazine. Founded in August of 2009 by Michael J DeMeo out of the dust of Portland, Oregon’s Sugar Gallery. DeMeo used his contacts as photo curator and began work on producing a magazine that would feature both new and established photo talent from around the world. In 2011 photographer Alyssa Noches joined No Thoughts as co-editor and art director.

No Thoughts Media is the publishing house expansion of the magazine that officially began in April of 2012. No Thoughts Media is aimed at producing high quality artist books and zines at affordable prices and are currently based out of Boston, Massachusetts.

No Thoughts has been featured at the Papier Gache Fanzine Festival in Paris, Offprint Festival in Paris, Une Petite Foret Zine Library in Middlesbrough England, Flash Forward Photo Fest 2012 in Boston, Independent Photography Festival in Melbourne Australia, the Portland Zine Symposium, Baltimore Book Fest, Even My Mum Can Make a Book event in Turkey, Indie Photobook Library in Washington DC, Booklet Art Zine Library in Japan, the Camera Club New York Annual Zine and Self-Published Book Fair, the Spring Zine Thing in Boston, Philadelphia Photo Arts Fair, Printmania event in Somerville MA and more.

No Thoughts has just produced their 8th issue.

No Thoughts Eight takes delight in the moments of everyday magic. Those occasions when life takes on a heightened significance. Rebellious, tender, surreal, or somber these are the moments that make an impression. Highlights from No Thoughts Eight include the legendary photographs of New York photographer Flo Fox, the striking portraits of Michael Stipe and Zach Galifianakis from Ray Lego, and the timeless beauty found in the work of Brad Elterman.

The rest of the No Thoughts contributors you have come to know with every issue are here too, producing solid new work: Michael Barolet, Aaron Feaver, David Richardson, Daniel Tepper, Megan McIsaac, Alexander Bergstrom, Alyssa Noches, and Michael J DeMeo. We are also proud to feature the work of photographers we love but have never published before such as Samuel Quinn, Eddy Pula, Ruth Swanson and Amanda Jasnowski.

All in all No Thoughts Eight offers 26 different photographers across 60 pages in stark black and white on 70lb smooth laser-white paper. Our cover is printed on 80lb glossy cover stock and features an image by the world famous Synchrodogs.
