In the Make is an online journal which documents the studios of West Coast American artists. Founded in 2011 by photographer Klea McKenna and writer Nikki Grattan, In the Make follows a look and learn ethos aiming to ignite interest in contemporary art practice through making it more accessible:

“We document these visits with the hope of revealing both the richness and the daily realities of creative work. [...] We are not art critics, but rather deeply curious observers; looking for the ways that each artist’s aesthetic pervades their environment and reveals their perspective.”

Featuring weekly interviews and photographs, each studio visit documents the artist’s work and practice, creating an introspective mosaic of what the term visual art means to artists today. It’s a fascinating glimpse inside the mind of the artist.
