CuratorSpace is a website which delivers the tools you need to manage art opportunities efficiently and stay in control.

A new website is making it easier for people and organisations to create exciting and well-managed art opportunities all over the country. It’s called CuratorSpace and is the result of a collaboration between an artist and a web developer in Leeds.

CuratorSpace is an online resource for anyone who wants to organise art opportunities for exhibitions, residencies, commissions, and more. It allows people to set up and manage their opportunities, share the details with artists and other participants, select contributions and keep track of all the many different communications that often arise. It also makes it easier for artists and contributors to offer their work for selection.

CuratorSpace has been designed and built by Leeds based team Louise Atkinson and Philip Bennison. Louise is an experienced artist/curator herself, and Philip is an innovative web developer. The site helps manage open calls by dealing with some of the time consuming administration, whilst adding useful tools that make storing and sharing important data and information a simple, secure and efficient process.

CuratorSpace fulfils a need Louise identified from her own work. She said, “I’ve been working as an artist and organising exhibitions for about 15 years. Initially Facebook groups made organising shows easier, but soon opportunities were being shared on different networks, with responses coming back through email, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook etc. making it very difficult to manage, especially if I was organising more than one event at once.

“After a conversation with web developer Philip Bennison about how we could create simple tools to help people organising exhibitions to manage submissions from artists, CuratorSpace was born.”
CuratorSpace was launched last year and has already picked up a number of key users – including the complex multi-site events of Saltaire Inspired and the prestigious East Street Arts, a Leeds based artists organisation with a national reach and reputation.

Bradford’s National Media Museum is using CuratorSpace to commission an artist in residence for The Season of Light 2015 – a series of installations and events responding to the UNESCO International Year of Light and Light Based Technologies. More recently, Bside Festival in Dorset have begun using it for their commissions and have been able to create a separate application form in French for French artists – which only goes to show just how adaptable the system is.

The Tetley, The Imaginary Museum curated by Louise Atkinson. Photo credit: Philip Bennison

East Street Arts have been increasingly using CuratorSpace to help manage their events. Lydia Catterall says “because applications remain outside individual email inboxes there’s no
risk of losing anything or missing anyone’s application. Everything is ordered, tidy and in the same format, and our staff can get access anytime they need. What’s more, CuratorSpace is flexible enough to meet our changing needs as we add new spaces, events and projects locally and nationally.”

June Russell from Saltaire Inspired said “managing a callout online has simply never been easier, and we recommend CuratorSpace highly.”

Louise and Philip are constantly developing the site and its facilities, “we are delighted that the project is getting use by bigger organisations as well as smaller curators and artists – it is what the site was designed for”.

Applications for Glasgow International 2016’s programmes are now open to both international and Scottish artists based in Glasgow.

Applicants are encouraged to be ambitious in their proposals for projects, events and exhibitions which are additional to their current programmes. Glasgow International exists to support artistic activity across the city and further details about our aims can be found in the handbook.

There are four strands you can apply to – Supported, Open Glasgow, Open Glasgow Bursary and Across the City. These are explained in more detail below.

Successful proposals are selected by the Director in consultation with Glasgow International’s Artistic Advisory Committee. Open Glasgow & Bursary will be selected by a small panel from Glasgow and further afield.

SUPPORTED PROGRAMME | Deadline: 1 June

The Supported Programme is a strand where organisations, groups or individuals can propose projects, events and exhibitions and request financial support from Glasgow International. Organisations need to demonstrate how this activity will be additional to their current programme, projects you would not otherwise be able to undertake.

OPEN GLASGOW | Deadline: 1 June

Open Glasgow is a fund specifically aimed at individual artists and curators to propose a project for Glasgow International. The total fund for Open Glasgow is £15,000 and this fund will be split across a number of projects as in previous years.

Artists should be currently based or have been educated in Scotland and should have at least 3 years professional experience.

OPEN GLASGOW BURSARY | Deadline: 1 June

The Open Glasgow Bursary is an award of £2,000 for a recent graduate or postgraduate who graduated two years or less from art school at the time of the festival in 2016.

Artists must be currently living or working in Glasgow and have studied for either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Scotland.

ACROSS THE CITY PROGRAMME | Deadline: 31 July

Glasgow International will consider proposals for any additional exhibitions, events, performances. Across the City programme proposals will not receive funding from the festival but form an integral part of the Glasgow International programme.

For more information and to apply online, please visit Glasgow International 2016.

Following the success of their inaugural 2014 festival (80 artists, 32 venues), Glasgow Open House Art Festival’s (GOH) next event will take place from the 1 – 4 May 2015 with an ambitious programme of exhibitions and events taking place across a diverse range of venues in Glasgow.

Glasgow Open House Art Festival 2014: 1 Royal Terrace

Glasgow Open House is an artist-led, not-for-profit organisation that was founded in order to meet the practical needs of the city’s grassroots art community. Taking its lead from Glasgow’s already prevalent ‘do-it-yourself’ culture in relation to visual art and music, GOH provides a platform for artists both new and established, opening up their practices — and in many instances their homes — to new audiences.

GOH seeks proposals from artists of every creative persuasion for its 2015 festival. Visual artists, musicians and performers are all invited to come up with exciting ideas for an event or exhibition to take place in an alternative venue or space in Glasgow. It is expected that a large proportion of venues selected by artists will be domestic spaces. Artists are encouraged to use any space they can get their hands on — their living rooms, bathrooms, sheds and basements. Also sought are proposals that aim to occupy unusual or alternative spaces across the city. Last year the festival featured an exhibition in a van and a sculpture park in an unruly wasteland (for other examples of spaces used in the 2014 festival, take a look at the GOH’14 website).

The Release by Altronix at STREETLAND Photo: Glasgow Open House Festival

2015 is an exciting year for Glasgow Open House Art Festival as it will be the first time that it will take place without the presence of other major events happening in the city at the same time (i.e. The Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme and Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art). GOH is expanding its festival programme to include an increased number of scheduled performance events including music, dance, theatre, happenings, readings and everything in between, ensuring that the festival reflects the breadth of activity happening in the city.

Next year will also see the introduction of performative ‘Art Walks’, artist workshops and outreach projects. The Art Walks will offer a new perspective of the city to those making their way round the myriad of exhibitions and events. More information about the Art Walks will be revealed once the GOH’15 venues are confirmed.

While GOH welcomes proposals from artists based outside Glasgow, all participants must source their own venues to take part. Although it is preferred that venues are confirmed by the proposal deadline, GOH will treat each proposal on an individual basis.

To apply to take part in next year’s festival follow the link.

Limousine Bull Artists’ Collective is an artist-led, registered charity, run by volunteers with the support of Aberdeen City Council.

The collective was formed in 1998 by a group of eight artists who wanted to create a space dedicated to the support and development of students and emerging artists in Aberdeen. At that time, it was located in a small shop unit in the centre of Aberdeen. In 2005, the collective moved into our present premises in Torry, Aberdeen, which offered artists a larger gallery area to exhibit.

Earlier this year we were successful in further expanding the facilities on offer by opening a suite of five connecting project rooms. One of these rooms is available as a residency room with the opportunity of a closing exhibition in the gallery area.

Over the years Limousine Bull has seen many artists participate in our cultural evolution by staging diverse events and exhibitions, attracting artists locally and internationally. Board members typically serve up to two years, thereby contributing to the fresh, inventive and often spontaneous nature of the collective.

Our aim is to continue to promote and encourage contemporary art in Aberdeen with a varied programme of innovative events facilitated by students, emerging and other interested artists. We hope to build on and broaden links with other cultural bodies in Aberdeen and beyond, providing a unique space to collaborate, experiment and exhibit.

At this exciting stage in Limousine Bull’s history, it seems another leap in the creative, cultural vision and direction of the collective is on the horizon.

The project Radius is a process and a product; it’s a physical mapping and it parallels a personal ideology. Referencing my personal experience is a way of understanding why I think this project is vital.

A natural development while creating an art practice is finding ones voice and having a sense of self worth and confidence to put it out there to a wider audience. There is no one way and if I believed that there was only one way I’d have probably given up a long time ago.

I have been building my community and confidence in small increments, learning about the well established art scene, artist run projects, private and public galleries, collectives, non-traditional art spaces, also by writing proposals, making work, more looking, attending lectures, talks, openings. It’s an overwhelming resource of creative wealth and opportunity. While trying to find my own artistic identity I have been my biggest obstacle, that little voice in my head created scenarios and negative responses before I had even really tried. A way that I have come to quiet this nuisance is to be as generous to myself as I am to other artists.

Individuals are at different levels and this diversity conveys prospects. A giant library of information to acknowledge. Something about silencing that inner critic is an important part of learning how to move forward. Fear is a terrible place to make work from, failure is a part of success, and what I am trying to sum up here is that it’s critical to explore ideas from a genuine place.

Radius is the result of considering other voices that are still refining themselves by taking risks, putting their work out their and confronting opportunity. It is a measurement along the path of discovery. To perceive in a radial fashion, moving from the centre out is exactly what I am trying to communicate, with this map and within.

Radius verses Fringe

Radius is a better explanation, and ethos of the project I am trying to make happen. Radius means events and exhibitions that are within a particular area in relation to something at the heart. The official Gi programme is at the heart, and all of the massive energy of Glasgow creativity generally sits within a radial area all round the city. No judgement values, just an indication of spread and ultimately inclusion. Fringe on the other hand means outer, marginal, extreme. And often unconventional. So it’s about other and difference.

I feel a huge wave of relief and excitement for this year’s GI Festival. It is a bit of a personal journey to be involved in project Radius. I feel as if all the arrows are now pointing in the right direction.

Please look for the call open submission under the title Radius. Looking forward to your contributions!
