The Fruitmarket Gallery is internationally-recognised. Find out more...

The Fruitmarket Gallery is a publicly-funded contemporary art gallery of national and international significance, and is Scotland’s leading contemporary art space. It has an internationally-recognised creative programme and a loyal and ever-increasing audience.

The Gallery’s principal aim is to make contemporary art accessible without compromising art or underestimating audiences, and it presents world-class, thought-provoking and challenging exhibitions of contemporary art made by both Scottish and international artists. The 2012 Festival exhibition concentrates on the theme of the diary in the work of Dieter Roth. Roth was one of late twentieth century art’s major figures, and although he died in 1998, his work remains of interest to artists and audiences alike. He has a particular connection to Edinburgh, having been part of Richard Demarco’s exhibition Strategy Get Arts at the 1970 International Festival. This will be the first time his work has been seen in Scotland since.

The Gallery is also home to Scotland’s leading contemporary culture bookshop and a busy café making fresh, tasty lunches and delicious cakes. The Gallery sits neatly behind Edinburgh’s Waverley Station and is close to many bus routes and the Royal Mile, North Bridge, Waverley Bridge and Princes Street.

Find out the latest on Scotland’s Centre for Architecture and Design

The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Architecture and Design, has been on quite a journey in the last 2 or 3 years. 2012 will be a big year for us and will definitely be the one in which we re-emerge as a Design Centre. There are lots of things planned; the launch of our new web-site (working with Tangent), the launch of a series of bi-monthly events that will interest and inspire. We have a programme of exhibitions that along with the fantastic exhibitions hosted by A + DS, means that there will be a busy programme to take us through this year. We recently appointed a Creative Programme Officer who will impact on this year as well as take us into 2013.

We have been working with Bruce Newlands@Skirmishes and with the support of Creative Scotland we will open a 3D digital fabrication laboratory this May called MAKLab. It is already attracting lots of interest and will offer Design and Architectural businesses fantastic access to great facilities, will link Scotland to all the FabLabs around the world and every Saturday will be open to the public so everyone can make something they have designed. The educational/workshop opportunities are also really exciting.

We have been working with O Street to develop some fantastic marketing icons, see the examples of our latest icons, The Lovers and Shopaholics. The latest is for the Design Markets we’ll be holding. We are hoping to have 6 markets which will be hosted by Crab Apple Arts or The Lighthouse. These should be a lot of fun and help small design businesses sell direct to the public. The one we ran last year got lots great feedback.

Right now we are a couple of weeks away from launching our digital gallery. We will be able to project an image that could be 4.5 m by 3m. There will be a call for commissions, alongside the opportunity for people to submit and show work throughout the year. For more details contact, mary.pettigrew@drs.glasgow.gov.uk

So … we are back. The new website will have forums for discussion and a gallery for members. We really want to hear from you, especially what you think The Lighthouse can do to promote Design and Architecture.

The SHO was established in Sep 2010 by Emily (Jewellery maker) & Dan (Animator). Based in Roath, Cardiff, the venture was set up as a friendly boutique art gallery and shop. The SHO supports both local and international artists and designers with frequently changing exhibitions. A mix of traditional art forms alongside contemporary digital design and illustration brings the venue alive with a cocktail of stimulating and inspirational work.

On display we have a mix of Original artworks, limited edition art prints, inspirational literature & magazines, collectable vinyl toys, home-wares and wearable designs such as jewellery and apparel.

Our plan is to host many more diverse future mixed/solo shows alongside one off events such as customised toy auction charity fundraisers, of which we have a couple lined up this summer.

We welcome exhibition proposals from artists [see below for a current callout].

Upcoming Exhibition – Call for entries

We are welcoming artists’ submissions to be part of our upcoming exhibition. This will be based around the art of character creation either in the form of individual character design or compositions of them within scenes of their fictional worlds/landscapes.

Visual personalities with strong/interesting identities and atmospheric characterized settings created through imagination and brought to life through style & design.

Cat Ingall set herself a task to create a poster which promotes the smaller, less publicised music venues in Glasgow. We think she did a fine job too.

Here is what Cat has to say about the piece of work:
“I feel like I don’t take advantage of living in such a brilliant city. So I wanted this poster to show a big clump of venues all running into each other and overlapping, like a really confused map.”

The Duchy is a gallery working with the most exceptional recent graduates, emerging artists, more established practitioners and other artist-led initiatives. Established in 2009 and run by a team of two directors, Lauren Currie and Ainslie Roddick, the gallery and the gallery programme aims to promote a wide range of artistic experiences to a diverse audience, working towards being an inviting and inclusive part of the community whilst maintaining a high standard of support to artists within the programme.

Since opening in 2009, The Duchy has held 18 exhibitions, providing emerging and established talent with a community in which to share ideas and further their knowledge. Established in response to the need for a new professional platform for artists in Scotland, the gallery’s focus is to ensure the highest level of artistic quality and curatorial vision. The programme incorporates artists of varying experiences and aims to integrate these practices, rather than create a hierarchy of promotion. Situated within 2 shops units on the main thoroughfare to Glasgow’s east end, the gallery also aims to uphold the regeneration of the area by remaining a thriving beacon of activity, providing scope for dialogue and debate between the exhibiting artists and their audiences, as well as the local community and the wider public.

2012’s programme will bring several artists to Scotland for the first time and will incorporate a sculptural residency, links with other artist-run spaces in Europe, new graduates and established artists from around the UK. We will also be presenting 2 projects for Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art; London-based GSA graduate Pio Abad will present a solo show in the Duke Street gallery, whilst an off-site project Arrives in Starting will commission the work of 11 strong, emerging Scottish artists in the city.

The Duchy’s current exhibition, Alexander Stalmann Simultan, is open Friday and Saturday 12-6pm until 18 December. The exhibition incorporates vast illuminated canopies and structures made from tactile lo-fi ephemera such as plastic tarpaulin, wood, household spices, netting and paper, exploring a constant shifting of textures, surfaces, patterns and meanings.

Scotland has had a Travelling Gallery fairly continually since 1978 when the Scottish Arts Council put the very first one on the road which was an old bus conversion. Now with a fairly fancy custom-built gallery designed by Sutherland Hussey architects the Travelling Gallery continues the tradition of bringing art to the people with support from Creative Scotland, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the City of Edinburgh Council.

The previous exhibition, Drawn In, which toured from the Borders to Shetland and back again for 4 months, included newly commissioned works from Katy Dove, Rob Churm and Franziska Furter – and saw an average of 140 folk per day onboard – not bad for a wee space that doesn’t stay still for long. The next exhibition, Waste Management, is expected to be just as popular and is a collaboration between Edinburgh based Jonathan Owen and Glasgow based artist Charlie Hammond. Here Alison talks us through the background and installation of Waste Management before its launch on Thursday 25th August at the City Art Centre in Edinburgh.

I first approached Jonathan Owen about having an exhibition in the Travelling Gallery about 2 years ago. I’d been a huge fan of his work since seeing an elegantly carved gasmask at an Embassy Gallery exhibition some time ago and then later on he had a one person show at Doggerfisher which included more carving of readymades (Habitat coatstands and wine racks) and erased book pages of statues (see www.jonathanowen.org).

I was happy for him to have a solo show but also suggested that he could choose a second artist to share the exhibition with – providing there was some link between both practices. Generously, Jonathan embraced this idea and that resulted in us both meeting Charlie Hammond for the first time in the storage cupboard of the Sorcha Dallas Gallery in Glasgow at the beginning of the year.

Putting 2 artists together who had previously never met and asking them to work together on one exhibition in a small, challenging space could’ve been a risky move. However, Jonathan and Charlie seemed to hit it off straight away and were soon in the pub discussing various ideas. They were both very keen to do a collaborative work for the exhibition and as Charlie had recently tried his hand at screen printing the plan was to create a poster for the exhibition which we would also use to promote the tour and combine with an interpretative leaflet that all visitors could take away with them.

The screen print process soon took hold though – both artists found it the ideal medium for combining ideas and layering up images – and what started out as one poster has resulted in a whole series of one-off collaborative prints which have become the core of the exhibition.

Initially disappointed that we probably wouldn’t have room for any of Charlie’s paintings or Jonathan’s erased book pages, once I saw the prints I was very happy that we will have a truly collaborative and cohesive installation. The prints are great!

We started preparing the space for installation last week and while Dave and Paul our technicians made the frames for the prints, Charlie and Jonathan decided how the space would be used. Jonathan produced a Tupperware box from a Tesco shopping bag and inside was a brand new carved wooden sculpture – originally a monk pouring wine which he bought on eBay – but now much more intriquing. The next day Charlie arrived with 3 chairs he made from old school chair frames and wheelie bins. On Thursday they didn’t appear and instead spent the day in Jonathan’s studio spray painting onto used fawny brown carpet tiles…

Tuesday 23rd: Two days to go and Charlie and Jonathan are fitting the stencilled carpet tiles. They really bring the exhibition together and surprisingly make the space look bigger – they do smell a bit though. The screen prints are all now beautifully framed – 6 on the wall so far and another 9 waiting to be placed. I like this exhibition.
