Shadow Screen was an exploratory process. Central Station worked with product designer Paul Kerlaff to create new patterns for the Shadow Screen service produced by his company, With Kerlaff.

Participants from all creative disciplines were invited to submit not only design proposals but also critical feedback, suggestion and comment. The idea was that the doors to the competition process were thrown open, to promote critical engagement and hence offer value to all who participated.

In contrast to traditional competition formats, a long ‘shortlist’ were invited to show their proposals, for feedback by an invited panel of luminaries and by interested observers. There was one ‘winner’, but 5 of the shortlisted entries were offered a licence agreement for their pattern, alongside valuable exposure and feedback. Viewers were invited not to ‘vote’ in an X-factor style format but instead to use their powers of articulate persuasion to sway critical opinion.

Paul blogged regularly, as did the short listed designers. Read what they had to say, see their designs and find out more about the project by browsing through these:

It made for a pleasant change recently to down tools, hang up the overalls and meet with Stephen Cappello, winner of the recent Shadow Screen competition, to discuss with Damien and Genny from ISO the next steps in realising the design.

On the face of it, the process of making a striking, freestanding, screen using Stephen’s Braille based pattern seemed fairly simple – just apply to an existing template that works well, take a few photos and and hey presto, new product launched. But much as I’m a fan of the path of least resistance, it didn’t seem appropriate to knock out more of the same. In fact, the three panel folding screen that is the most clearly identifiable image of the Shadow Screen range is not really a ‘product’ in the conventional sense – it was created for a Beruit Spa, who needed a lightweight, moisture resistant, folding screen. The impetus for it’s development was context driven, and like all good design, it justified it’s presence by creating value in response to this context.

The dilemma of speculative product design is that it has no real context, or at best an assumed one, and so its claim of creating value rests on the believability of a fiction. Because the Shadow Screen service creates value by responding appropriately to the needs of particular contexts, through the means of screening, filtering and defining threshold space, it seems counter intuitive to choose fictional context over reality. Context is arguably essential to showing the value of the Shadow Screens, and particularly so if the winning design is to be used to show the potential of the collaborative work.

The judging panel were attracted by Stephen’s design not only it’s simplicity and economy, but also by the potential to encode site specific content into the work. The digitally based means of fabrication inherently offers freedom from the constraints of tooling set up costs, and the best design has always fully exploited the potential of production. it makes an enormous amount of sense, therefore, for the made design to respond to real contexts, not only formally, but through site specific content. Buildings have long been judged on their appropriateness to context. It will be fascinating to see if product design, like the best architecture, can respond intelligently to place.

IETM (International Network for Performing Arts) and Central Station have teamed up to offer one lucky member the opportunity to showcase visual artwork during this year’s Autumn Plenary meeting in Glasgow. Congratulations to Leigh Chorlton (website here) who caught our collective eye with his disconcerting collection of work around the theme of retro-culture.

Leigh was picked from an exceptionally strong field. It wasn’t an easy choice. Thanks to all who showed an interest. Particularly Pennywrite and distorted.time who only just missed out.

Leigh will be exhibiting his work at the hairdresser’s space opposite Stereo on Renfield Lane in Glasgow between Thursday 4th November and Sunday 7th November. Stay tuned for details of the preview!

IETM (www.ietm.org) is Europe’s most significant membership organisation of its kind and 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of Glasgow’s year as City of Culture. Under the theme of ‘Voices’, the programmes will embrace the entire city, its people and its culture. Many performances can be booked through venue box offices and the remainder will be bookable through the Centre for Contemporary Arts box office.

twEATS Explained

In August 2010, Central Station teamed up with NVA, Landshare & River Cottage to bring you a live twitter cook off.

After calling for your grow your own recipe ideas for NVA’s Harvest festival later that month, we then asked designers to put themselves forward to design the a special cookbook/newspaper with all of the recipe ideas. Hilary Grant was our winner and she did a stirling job.

To get everyone’s culinary juices flowing, we had River Cottage’s Head Chef, Tim Maddams, join us over twitter to orchestrate a live cooking event. It rocked. Although not everyone’s meal ended up as tasty as Tim’s, it was a good time had by all.

Below is a more in-depth account of what happened when. Click on the links and re-live the Tasty twEATS!

It’s all for NVA’s Glasgow Harvest, a couple of weeks later at Tramway’s Hidden Gardens on 28th August. If you haven’t read about it yet, it’s a celebration of urban farming aiming to educate and encourage people to grow their own food.

This is our rolling blog, which we update with news, info or just general excitement that we want to share.

/////////////////

twEATs!
You’ve cooked along while watching on telly, you’ve even cooked along to a blog on the net, so now Central Station, Landshare and River Cottage are hosting a live cooking event of our own… on Twitter! To find out the ins and outs, check out our twEATs.

Basically, it looks like this:
- Tim Maddams, Head Chef at River Cottage Axminster Canteen and Deli has selected a dish (vegetarian) from one of their fantastic seasonal recipes for you to cook up.

- Next week the ingredients you will need to cook this mystery recipe will be revealed, giving you a few days to get yourself organised. How you get the ingredients is up to you – you could pick them from your garden, barter with other keen growers for ingredients, visit your local grocer or go out foraging in the wild. What ever floats your boat.

- on the day itself the chef will give step-by-step directions over Twitter – @rivercottage – on what to do with your ingredients, with the odd picture to keep you on the right track. It’s going to literally be a twitter FEED (see what we did there?)

- you send us your own twEATs and pics as it all happens, letting us know how your culinary skills have held up. And chef will be able to answer any relevant queries as the feed continues. Then we’ll put it all together in an exclusive publication available only at Glasgow Harvest on 28 August.

How can you get involved? We’re glad you asked…

1. Source your ingredients:
In the spirit of NVA and Landshare, we encourage you to find your ingredients locally, if at all possible; perhaps you already have your own windowbox or herb patch, or know of a veggie-growing neighbour who you could trade with. Check out your local farmers’ markets to find a variety of fresh produce, or head out into the countryside yourself, to forage for your food! If you feel inspired to begin growing your own food but don’t have access to a garden, check out Landshare’s programme matching growers with spare land in their area.

2. twEATs aplenty:
This is when you get to eat what you tweet!
Collect together your ingredients and utensils; keep the evening free in your diary, have your computer or phone charged and camera to hand.
Then prepare to cook a dinner you could tweet home about.

3. Go to Harvest:
Pick up a copy of the twEATs’ publication, eat good food, get a punk herb hair-do, check out the jam wall & have a hoot!

UPDATE: WE HAVE A WINNER!

Central Station is chuffed to announce that Hilary Grant (hilarygrant) is the winner of our twEATs designcompetition.

Here are the winning entries:

POTTED SALAD

and

ICED TEA

Hilary is one half of art collective Edible/Wearable, which she formed with Mahala la May, a fellow student at Duncan of Jordanstone College. Since graduating in 2007, Hilary has designed textiles and accessories for Alexander McQueen, Clare Tough and Tait & Style. She spent the last year working with creative research group Distance Lab and is currently a freelance illustrator and designer.

Angus Farquhar, Creative Director of NVA and one of the judges for our competition said: “I chose Hilary out of a really diverse field with many strong contenders, as I liked her clear and bold style; it is uncomplicated but lively and capable of lifting a simple recipe off the page.”

His fellow judge, Mark Breslin from ISO Design, agreed: “Both of Hilary’s entries have a strong graphic feel, they were really appropriate for the scale and production qualities of the newspaper format. I really liked the contrast between her two entries (yes, two entries – one isn’t enough these days), the first being a sequence of frames illustrating the process, the other a strong single image.”

We can’t wait to see what she does with our limited-edition publication, available only at NVA’s GlasgowHarvest Festival on Sat 28th August.

////////////////

NVA:
NVA is a public arts organisation founded in Glasgow in 1992. Our practice is directly engaged in the wider world of urban and rural landscapes. We use a collective approach both in terms of artistic development and also to encourage audiences to participate physically and creatively. We take what is ‘there’ as a starting point to uncover complex underlying realities and to reveal how places shape and are shaped by their inhabitants.

Landshare:
If twEATS and Harvest have got you hankering after the good life, Landshare is the place to find a plot to grow some veggies on. Landshare is an online network where you can look for land to grow veg on, offer their spare land, or get help and tips from Veg Doctors and Helpers supported by Garden Organic, the Royal Horticultural Society and the National Trust.

Alburt on the process of a design competition

As its PROCESS month I thought I would share the steps I’ve gone through and am currently going through with a new competition idea.

IDEA
When I received the entries for my previous competition (Common of Houses: No Expense Spared) I noticed that most entrants were keen not just to see changes in the rules governing MPs’ expenses but also to see major changes in the way in which Government is actually formed and operates.

I started to think about other aspects of Government policy/ procedures that could do with a creative redesign. If we were to start again, what, and how could designers change the way that politics runs in this country?

With the General Election coming up in May 2010 there seemed like only one sensible place to start – the vote.

Once I had set that as the basic problem the real work started. First, obviously I had to sort out a brief but then I needed to try and find someone to fund the project and to be my media partners. I also needed to design a website, arrange for some prizes, attract a few big name judges, sort out an exhibition of the results and get lots of good PR. Quite a bit of work when you work as an architect by day and as a designer by night, especially when you decide the competition launch needs to happen by the 15 March.

BRIEF
Once the brief was roughly drafted up, I then set about the website, thinking it easier to attract project sponsors with something to show them but then came the questions – who to get as project partners?

SPONSORS
With the first competition, the Archtitect’s Journal and The Lighthouse were the two main sponsors. The Daily Telegraph had also said they were interested but I could never tie them down. Having wasted a lot of time phoning round people for the first comp I was loath to do so again but in the end that’s what I ended up having to do. As a result I had a coffee last week with the head of the “Vote for a Change” campaign who has agreed to provide some funding and I’ve been chatting to the editors of a few design mags like Creative Review and The Drum about getting their media support. All in all, its gone reasonably well so far, I think having the first CoH competition behind me has really helped to understand what I’m trying to do and hopefully I’ll convince some more partners to donate some funds.

NEXT STEPS
In a few days I’ll update some more on the next steps and the development process the brief has gone through and my ideas for the prizes and the judges.
