Making the transition from education to the workplace can be very difficult. Education teaches you the skills you need to do a job, however it doesn’t necessarily teach you how to land one. Futurerising addresses this dilemma with inspiration, learning and support for your career.

What should be in your CV? What questions should you ask in an interview? How can you stand out from other candidates? How do you negotiate your first salary?

Futurerising highlights internship and employment opportunities, shares biographies from industry professionals, posts reviews of the latest industry work and uploads industry tips and advice.

Futurerising has live briefs for you to submit your ideas to. At the moment, they’re looking for a social media campaign strategy for Batman versus Superman and a creative way for Greenpeace to recruit the next generation of environmentalists.

Upcoming Futurerising events include Leeds College of Art on 5 February, Cambridge University on 17 February, Bournemouth University on 15 March and Middlesex University on 4 April. At each event they bring along an eclectic mix of speakers from creative, planning, accounts and strategy, through to tech and start-ups.

The good folks at Titan Props let us in for a sneak peek and to talk us through their collection.

Titan Props is a vast warehouse in Kinning Park; to the creative and curious it is lighter fluid ready to flame. We have a vast array of props – everything and anything you can think of. There is an infinity curve studio where music videos come to life (Young Aviators, Blood Relatives, and many more). There is expansive buildspace where theatre sets take shape. In essence, it’s a place for anyone whose bread-and-butter is creativity: photographers, stylists, music festival coordinators, events organisers, artists, film and TV art departments, exhibitions…

As the creative sector in Glasgow (and Scotland) continues to flourish, the need for places like Titan becomes ever more apparent. Our ethos is to provide high quality services at sensible prices. We recognise that innovation in any discipline is a continuous process and that flexibility is important for ideas to fully develop. The store is not clinical, it is an organised jumble where you can find anything from a replica of an original 60′s Dalek which was used in the BBC’s upcoming docu-drama An Adventure in Space and Time, to an immense selection of smalls including typewriters, cameras and record players. We cater for the experienced professional, as well as those who are up-and-coming. It’s a place where anyone can use the high quality resources they crave, in an atmosphere that strikes the right balance between friendly and professional.

But it’s not all work… Titan is a fledgling venue for exciting events, something which has only been open to family and friends so far, but we’re keen to develop this. Earlier in the year we had a Withnail and I movie night – aptly decked out in props such as the grotty kitchen which the two characters must tackle at the beginning of the film. And of course, lots of wine. On 9 November this year we hosted our second annual Halloween party where great people and great bands (Three Blind Wolves, Young Aviators) came together for an awesome night. Perhaps the highest standard of fancy dress ever seen in the western hemisphere but we couldn’t say for sure.

What:
Questioning Creatives is a website created to offer a better idea of a creative career path. It was originally setup by a graphic designer when his daughter was considering a career as an illustrator. After trying to explain that an illustrator’s life isn’t as simple as sitting at a desk all day, drawing nice pictures, he decided that it would be good to setup a website with interviews and career stories. This site is not just for prospective illustrators, but for anyone involved in the creative industry.

Why we like it:
Professional illustrators and recent graduates explain how they got to where they are now, the best and worst things about their jobs and what they wish they’d known at the beginning. This site provides a clearer idea of what a creative’s life is really like, alongside some words of wisdom. If you’re struggling to decide if a creative path is really for you, then these stories, tips and ideas might make that decision a little easier. We just wish it was around ten years ago…

Who:
Craig Barrowman is a multimedia artist and curator based in Aberdeen. He is a founding member of collaborative art group Stray Dog and recently facilitated the ‘Art + Politics’ strand of Temporary Art School.

Why we like it:
Drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, performance and curating are all part of Barrowman’s creative practice. His website demonstrates his talents in a clear, visual way, enticing you to learn more about them.

Hidden treasure:
Short Trip was part of a group exhibition in 2006 where Barrowman took small groups of people out to an undisclosed location (Nigg Bay). He recorded their conversations in the car and played them through the car stereo to the following group of people. Notable praise goes to the brave participants, as well as the artist for this unique project.

Bread Collective is a creative collective based in East London, made up of illustrators, graphic designers, art directors, set designers, photographers and filmmakers. We have four core members: Luke James, Owen Phillips, Victoria Walmsley and Jo Lee, regularly collaborating with a wider network of creatives.

Having worked with each other in the past, we began as a group of friends discussing how we could stretch ourselves creatively and work on more ambitious projects by combining our different skills. We chose the name Bread, as we liked the idea ‘to break bread’, meaning the idea of a friendly social interaction where something is shared.

Bread was officially established in 2012 after we were awarded funding by the London Legacy Development Corporation for a community project to improve the area where we all live in Hackney Wick, just outside the Olympic park. The project was enthusiastically received by local residents and attracted media attention by the Guardian, the BBC and a list of top design magazines and blogs, such as Creative Review.

As the year has progressed, we have been extremely lucky to work with a variety of great clients, including: Carhartt, Maharishi, Monkstone Knitwear, Samsung, Beck’s, Lovebox Festival and Cnwd.

Where possible, we strive to work on worthy projects that we believe in, and we’ve enjoyed running workshops with the public. This has led us to work on inspirational projects such as the Do Lectures, and Kaleidoscope Festival which launches at the Barbican in November.

Louise Emslie

Located in a windowless subterranean city-centre warren that operated previously as rehearsal space and recording studios, 26 was formed in 2009 by a group of six NE-Scotland based visual artists, initially to meet the need for low-cost, independent studio space.

26 Collective studio is now managed by Stray Dog and provides communal space, a b+w darkroom, permanent accommodation for seven visual artists and two bands, and supports the wider creative community with regular collaborative projects and events, including exhibitions, installations and screenings (Stray Dog Project Room), The Mural Project (a season of collaborative live-mural club nights curated by Jon Reid), Tuff Wax/Dolfinz single launch, and ongoing podcast/video series POST.

Our current aims are: to continue supporting and retaining emerging talent in Aberdeen by providing independent, low-cost studio space and developing opportunities to showcase new work; to provide a creative, social space for the exchange of ideas and strengthening of networks; and to make connections beyond our local region, building new collaborations and bringing creative talent to the city.

What:
Tiny Universe describes themselves as “a creative playground and online store set up to promote the idea of play, creativity and imagination.” They have a shop which sells some pretty good-looking sketchbooks and stickers.

It may seem like it’s aimed at a younger audience, but in fact Tiny Universe was started by illustrator Simon Wild who actively promotes the creation of colourful, brilliant, imaginative things.

Why we like it:
Apart from the totally original and fun interactive website, Tiny Universe allows you to upload your doodles, designs and other creations for a chance to be featured on their gallery here.
