Glasgow Women’s Library Autumn/Winter programme launches on Tuesday 11 August with two special events at the Library (1pm-3pm and 6pm-7.30pm). Come along to 23 Landressy Street to meet the GWL team with trailers, tasters and treats as they launch an alluring Autumn programme of screenings, Story Café reading events, performances, workshops, exhibitions and talks.

You’ll have the first chance to book places on the popular Women’s Heritage Walks, unmissable Trailblazer talks, and National Lifelong Learning Programme’s events out and about across Scotland. Hear about the upcoming exhibition which marks the calendar end of the one year residency by artist Mandy McIntosh with Glasgow Women’s Library and Castlemilk Community Centre. Then have a look at trailers for our ‘Love is…’ film screenings in late Autumn that take love from the page to the screen for the BFI Love season. Re-kindling audience passions for film and literature’s most enduring love stories by women, these screening events will present films to fall in love with and films to break your heart.

Visit GWL at the Programme Launch to hear how their Sex in the Women’s Library season will culminate in September with the launch of a new sexology themed publication ‘Sex Between the Covers,’ and screenings of the short films and podcasts developed from the illuminating discussion, drama and comedy sessions that have been taking place at GWL this summer.

Later this year, Black Dingo Productions presents ‘Creepie Stool’ by Jen McGregor. Set in Edinburgh, 1637, this captivating historical drama tells the story of Jenny Geddes. Cabbage seller Jenny flings a stool at a minister and starts a riot in St Giles. Calvinists and Catholics clash on city streets and Jenny’s employer demands an explanation – leading to unwelcome discoveries behind closed doors. This atmospheric evening performance of ‘Creepie Stool’ is in partnership with Black Dingo Productions as part of GWL’s Mixing The Colours: Women Speaking About Sectarianism project and their ongoing work to share women’s experiences of sectarianism.

Story Café © GWL

Glasgow Women’s Library’s warm and welcoming Story Café is the perfect way to relax over lunchtime. These regular events continue throughout the Autumn/Winter programme with some fascinating specials to look forward to. October sees ‘Banned Books Week’ a celebration of the glorious freedom to read, and a special event at GWL to explore the work of banned and challenged women writers from across the world, including Alice Walker, Nadime Gordimer and Toni Morrison. Find out more at the programme launch and, if it’s your first visit, take the opportunity to sign up as a borrower giving you access to ‘hard to find anywhere else’ books by, for and about women. From pioneering women artists, explorers and political activists to fiction and poetry from Scotland and all around the world, this lending library will have something to intrigue and inspire you.

Glasgow Women’s Library Programme Launch also offers a chance to meet the team and feedback on the activities you have taken part in or the programme as a whole. And, of course, in true GWL fashion, the kettle will be on and GWL looks forward to welcoming you for the afternoon or evening session.

Applications for Glasgow International 2016’s programmes are now open to both international and Scottish artists based in Glasgow.

Applicants are encouraged to be ambitious in their proposals for projects, events and exhibitions which are additional to their current programmes. Glasgow International exists to support artistic activity across the city and further details about our aims can be found in the handbook.

There are four strands you can apply to – Supported, Open Glasgow, Open Glasgow Bursary and Across the City. These are explained in more detail below.

Successful proposals are selected by the Director in consultation with Glasgow International’s Artistic Advisory Committee. Open Glasgow & Bursary will be selected by a small panel from Glasgow and further afield.

SUPPORTED PROGRAMME | Deadline: 1 June

The Supported Programme is a strand where organisations, groups or individuals can propose projects, events and exhibitions and request financial support from Glasgow International. Organisations need to demonstrate how this activity will be additional to their current programme, projects you would not otherwise be able to undertake.

OPEN GLASGOW | Deadline: 1 June

Open Glasgow is a fund specifically aimed at individual artists and curators to propose a project for Glasgow International. The total fund for Open Glasgow is £15,000 and this fund will be split across a number of projects as in previous years.

Artists should be currently based or have been educated in Scotland and should have at least 3 years professional experience.

OPEN GLASGOW BURSARY | Deadline: 1 June

The Open Glasgow Bursary is an award of £2,000 for a recent graduate or postgraduate who graduated two years or less from art school at the time of the festival in 2016.

Artists must be currently living or working in Glasgow and have studied for either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Scotland.

ACROSS THE CITY PROGRAMME | Deadline: 31 July

Glasgow International will consider proposals for any additional exhibitions, events, performances. Across the City programme proposals will not receive funding from the festival but form an integral part of the Glasgow International programme.

For more information and to apply online, please visit Glasgow International 2016.

The show sees Gallery 4 of The Lighthouse converted into a home. Running from 5 – 7 December, the home features work of Cat Cochrane, a writer/journalist and designer whose words will tell the story of a couple who are building a life together and collecting beautiful, functional, long lasting objects and items along the way. On the off chance that you still need to do your Christmas shopping, it’s helpful to know that almost everything in the home will be for sale.

The Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival returns with over 300 events around Scotland

The Scottish Mental Health and Arts Film Festival (SMHAFF) returns for an eighth year, running from 1 – 19 of October. With over 300 events around Scotland, the festival celebrates the artistic achievements of people with experience of mental health issues. The theme for this year is power.

Ana Ana – a UK premiere in our core film programme C Petr Lom, Corinne van Egeraat

Including theatre, film, literature and music, this year’s festival will kick off with all-day event Moving Minds, followed in short succession by three UK film premieres. One of the premieres is Ana Ana, a cinematic poem following four young Egyptian women struggling to make sense of their post-Arab Spring world through filmmaking.

In the Theatre programme, see Emma Jayne Park’s tour Status Anxiety & Thinking in the First Person featuring a hip hop performance exploring who we become when hidden behind a computer screen. This year, the festival will also host its very first International Writing Awards with Bipolar Scotland. Learn the power of the writing process for the understanding of and recovery from mental ill health. Slate: Drawing Exchange (detail on left) by Frank McElhinney (Fine Art Photography)
Ink on paper

The Glasgow School of Art is currently showing a selection of design and fine art work from The Glasgow School of Art’s 2014 Degree Show until 26 July. Based in the Burgh Hall in Dunoon, the exhibition features works from a selection of the graduates, some of whom lost their work in the Mackintosh fire.

Co-curators Theresa Moerman Ib & Colm Docherty said:
“The title of this year’s GSA in Dunoon show is borrowed from one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s watercolour drawings made in 1896. It reflects the unique process involved in selecting this year’s graduates for the exhibition due to the fire that damaged and destroyed a significant part of the Mackintosh Building and the Fine Art degree show on the 23rd of May 2014. Some works we were able to view physically, some survived only as photographic representations, some were lost entirely, while others had to be described to us verbally by department tutors or the artists themselves. By partly seeing existing work and partly imagining what the selected artists would be able to present, we worked diligently to curate a show that provides a visual and mental space for reflection on the events that have affected the entire GSA community over the past weeks. At the same time, it is a show that celebrates the resilient spirit of the graduates as they continue to make their mark beyond the physical boundaries of the art school itself.”

Remnants, Static, Bottle, Stone by Nicola Massie (Painting & Printmaking)
Screenprint on paper, image transfer on glass bottle and stone, various objects in resin.

Theresa Moerman Ib continues:
“At first glance, the works selected for this exhibition are modest and quiet works, small islands in a sea of white. But if you take your time with them and lean in close, you’ll realize that they’re screaming out loud. None of the works have been shown in public before, and they have either survived the fire, been recreated after the fact, or were made immediately before and after the tragic event. Each work bears testament to the fact that when artists hit a brick wall, they wince for a while, then dust themselves off and find innovative ways to climb over it. Dunoon Burgh Hall has kindly provided a stepladder to make that journey a little easier, and we are all grateful to be here. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with such inspiring makers – without their resilience and hard work, there would be no exhibition. A friend of mine noted this morning that the show looks like “a complete triumph over adversity”. I couldn’t agree more.”
