Online sound gallery by G. George.

London-based curatorial project G. George has launched a brand new project this week. The Listening Booth is an online sound gallery, which will host the audio work of, contemporary sound artists, musicians and writers.

The Listening Boothhas been created to provide a dedicated space for contemporary sound based art and a platform for experimental music. Traditional art galleries can be problematic spaces for hosting none visual works; however The Listening Booth allows the listener to experience the work in their own time. Along with a downloadable track many of the artists have included listening instructions, for example an artist can specify their work is best experienced at night, in the bath or on a commute. The listener is then able to embrace or ignore these instructions. This allows the artist and the listener to create their ideal gallery space.

The Listening Booth was created by artist Katie Tindle, ‘The Listening Booth reflects how we consume audio culture, through download and streaming. The Internet is the perfect space for a project of this kind because it bypasses the physical limitations of a gallery. It also allows us to play with the definitions of sound art, music and writing. The Listening Booth will host a lot of work that defies or straddles definitions. I felt it was important that the work be available for free so that it can be as widely accessible. By allowing their audience to download their work there’s a very intimate situation created between the artist and their listeners.’

Confirmed contributors include JDA Winslow, McGilvary/White, Eden Mitschenmaker, Taxi for My Uncle, Charles Verni, Nouria Bah.

A 30 minute preview of The Listening Booth was broadcast on Radio Anti during the Art Licks weekend, an arts festival held in October 2015. The preview can be heard here.

Gamma Transport Division (GTD) is a new space in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. Managed by Gav Brough in partnership with Gamma Proforma, GTD has three elements. It’s a refined art space which hosts exhibitions every 8 weeks, primarily within the Contemporary Urban vein, curated by Rob Swain. There’s a Bicycle Workshop which focuses on custom builds and bespoke styling, and while you take in the art or design your dream bike you can enjoy a great cup of coffee from a vintage 1962 Faema espresso machine.

The first show, which runs until 11 December is from veteran abstract graffiti artist sheOne (James Choules). They’ve created an iBook catalogue for iPad which has lots of photos and overview text: PDF Version | iPad Version

The next exhibition will be a solo show from Phil Ashcroft which opens on 13 December.

Participating venues include The Pier Arts Centre in Orkney, which will present a major exhibition of work by Zoë Walker & Neil Bromwich spanning more than 15 years of their practice. Caithness Horizons in Thurso will show the work of Douglas Gordon for the first time in the north of Scotland, whilst a specially curated exhibition of work by Toby Paterson will tour to venues in Kirkcaldy, Inverness, Peebles and Dumfries.
What:
Gallery of Mo is simple – you upload a photo and a talented artist creates a portrait with the addition of a fancy moustache. You can pick from over 100 selected artists to create your portait.

Why we like it:
Movember is an annual moustache growing charity event held in November that raises funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer. Movember comes round just once a year and if you can’t grow a tache, then Gallery of Mo is the next best thing.

Rhubaba Gallery and Studio is an artist-run organisation in Edinburgh that provides dynamic studio space for artists and an annual programme of exhibitions and events.

Alongside providing affordable studios for up to 20 artists at a time, Rhubaba run an annual public programme of exhibitions, performances, screenings and other one-off events. Rhubaba’s programme has included to date solo-shows by Ed Atkins, James Clarkson, Patrick Graf and Hannah James; groups shows and events with works by Nathalie De-Briey, Alex Gross, Rebecca Kressley, Ewan Sinclair, and collaborative projects with David Dale Gallery and Studios, Glasgow, Central Reservation, Bristol, the duchy gallery, Glasgow, Intercity Mainline, London, Lombard Method, Birmingham and Outpost Gallery, Norwich and more recently significant group exhibitions with artists including Gelitin, Julius Koller, Lucy Clout, David Blandy, Gintaras Didžiapetris and others.

Rhubaba was founded in 2009 as a communal studio and project space, in response to a gap in appropriate studio provision for recent graduates and the desire to create a space dedicated to both the production and presentation of contemporary art. Rhubaba initially housed ten recent graduates from Edinburgh College of Art and during its first year organised a series of exhibitions in temporary spaces around the city as well as with host venues further afield. Rhubaba has continued to develop an ambitious programme and moved to its current home in 2010 to accommodate more studios and a permanent gallery space.

There are currently fifteen artists working in the studios, built within the same space as the gallery, in a warehouse in Leith. The aim of the studios is to provide affordable workspace for early-career artists and foster a critical and supportive community, where self-organised activities such as meetings and critiques are enabled.

Rhubaba is committed to generating a supportive workspace and a dynamic platform for local and international artists. Rhubaba aims to give early-career artists the opportunity to produce new work in a discursive environment, work collaboratively with other artist-led initiatives and explore wider debates in contemporary art, bringing exciting and challenging works to Scotland. The gallery provides a welcoming and experimental environment for audiences to access thought provoking art projects.

Rhubaba Gallery and Studios can be found at 25 Arthur Street, Edinburgh, EH6 5DA.

White Cloth Gallery is a new space for photography and film in the City of Leeds.

Brainchild of creative directors Peter Dench and Sharon Price, the White Cloth Gallery aims to become a focal point for photography and film in the City of Leeds and the centre of a new city-wide arts network. Providing a cultural platform upon which established and upcoming artists can exhibit their work, White Cloth is a new and exciting venture and the first of its kind in the region.

Since opening, White Cloth gallery has exhibited an array of prestigious photographers including works by the acclaimed Jocelyn Bain Hogg and Chris Floyd.

White Cloth gallery is currently exhibiting Peter Dench’s ‘England Uncensored’ which started in July and will be running till 1 October 2012. ‘England Uncensored’ is a warts and all account of real England by celebrated photojournalist, Peter Dench. During a summer of British celebrations, the exhibition provides a geographical and socially unrestricted tour around England, covering themes of love, ethnicity, style, gastronomy and (of course) the weather.

Running from 4 October 2012 for nine weeks, Ewen Spencer’s exhibition, ‘Teenagers’ will be the next exhibition to follow in the success of previous works. Spencer, whose seminal shots of Channel 4’s award-winning Skins cast gained him nationwide acknowledgment in 2007, is set to unveil a series of photographs examining what it means to be young in 21st century Britain. This insightful exhibition captures the awkward moments of adolescence that are familiar to so many of us.

WAFA (We Are Fucking Awesome) is a family of artists. Not an agency or design studio. Not ambitious. Not promoting. Not commercial.

WAFA Poloraid by We Went North

We currently have members in Washington, Oregon, California, Minnesota, Maryland, Virginia, and the UK. We collaborate artistically, and our collaborations include zines, postcards, street art installations, music, web based initiatives, and gallery exhibitions. The artists in our collective have a diverse set of skills and interests, making it possible to achieve things together that we would not be able to in isolation. We also operate a web store which is primarily a way to sell our zines. We use the money to fund future projects.

Our community is important to us, and it is something we have nurtured over the past 5 years. Besides artistic collaborations, we offer support for one another and are active in each other’s lives as artists and individuals. This support system is more important than the work itself.

Find out more about Liverpool based Wolstenholme Creative Space

Wolstenholme Creative Space (WCS) is a not-for-profit Contemporary Gallery, Venue and Artist Studios based in Liverpool city centre.

Prior to establishing WCS, the building was home to and led by a collective of artists, who worked hard to improve the building. Since then, due to various developments and need for investment, the coordinators at the time took on the building as part of a new company name, and became the Directors of WCS.

Since the beginning of WCS, the Directors have worked hard towards a programme that works both independently and with other individuals and organisations to produce projects, events and exhibitions. Striving to sustain itself independently as a business and arts organisation.

The WCS programme is made up of two strands: WCS Presents – Exhibitions + Events produced by WCS and WCS Hosts – Exhibitions + Events produced by external organisations, collectives + individuals, and endorsed by WCS as part of our programme.

For WCS Hosts, WCS is committed to supporting individuals and collectives with courageous and good quality ideas.

As part of WCS Presents, we produce a varied programme of mixed art forms from both established and emerging creatives, for a wide-ranging audience to experience, enjoy and learn from. We endeavour to produce high quality work whist incorporating DIY methods of producing independently and spending less to create more.

Previous exhibitions have seen successful collaborations with organisations such as The Royal College of Art, Liverpool John Moores University and Independents Biennial as well as international involvement with artists from across Europe, America, Canada and Asia.

As well as providing a unique atmosphere for exhibitions, the gallery has also played host to a number of inspirational and experimental live music acts.

In the near future we hope to combine all the creative, production and collaborative skills WCS has built up in an exhibition for Independents Biennial (September – November 2012). The exhibition will be bold and a challenge for all the senses, with a programme of events not to be missed.

The SHO was established in Sep 2010 by Emily (Jewellery maker) & Dan (Animator). Based in Roath, Cardiff, the venture was set up as a friendly boutique art gallery and shop. The SHO supports both local and international artists and designers with frequently changing exhibitions. A mix of traditional art forms alongside contemporary digital design and illustration brings the venue alive with a cocktail of stimulating and inspirational work.

On display we have a mix of Original artworks, limited edition art prints, inspirational literature & magazines, collectable vinyl toys, home-wares and wearable designs such as jewellery and apparel.

Our plan is to host many more diverse future mixed/solo shows alongside one off events such as customised toy auction charity fundraisers, of which we have a couple lined up this summer.

We welcome exhibition proposals from artists [see below for a current callout].

We are welcoming artists’ submissions to be part of our upcoming exhibition. This will be based around the art of character creation either in the form of individual character design or compositions of them within scenes of their fictional worlds/landscapes.
