Installations feature on Edinburgh's Rose Street for Christmas shoppers.

An artist-led project with independent retailers along Edinburgh’s Rose Street has appeared in time for Christmas.
Curated by Edinburgh Palette, the project involves retailers collaborating with illustrators, ceramicists, textile artists and printmakers to create Christmas window displays with a difference.

Mail Boxes Etc. Izzy Bocchetti

The highly individual installations for The Rose Street Project create a public gallery right on the high street, providing public art open to everyone visiting the city, day and night until early January.

The project is a result of measures put in place by Essential Edinburgh to improve Rose Street’s identity and community engagement. Nestled between George Street and Princes Street, Rose Street and its independent retailers are often overshadowed by the major retailers nearby. This project aims to help put Rose Street on the map by boosting footfall and increasing activity there.

Murdo Maclean’s Anupa Gardner

The result has been less about traditional Christmas display, but instead has created highly individual installations in a new, public context, demanding new and fresh approaches to the invited artists’ creative practices.

Glasgow’s street art mural trail has brightened up the city’s degraded areas

Embracing the concept of street art, The City Centre Regeneration team has created the very first City Centre Mural Trail, all contained in one easy walking route.

One of the first murals was painted by street artist Sam Bates (aka Smug) in celebration of Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and features swimmers underneath the Kingston Bridge, Anderston Quay. Another one not to miss by Smug is Five Faces which represents comical expressions of people playing with yoyos under the Caledonian Railway, Broomielaw.

A favourite with taxi drivers is Rogue-one’s The World’s Most Economical Taxi on Mitchell Street. The artist actually painted the wall to look like a brick wall with incredible attention to detail. Whilst on Mitchell Street, you can’t miss Smug’s huge Honey I Shrunk the Kids photo realistic piece. The immense image depicts a larger than life girl with a magnifying glass studying an object off the street. At the right angle you can line yourself up for a photograph of this girl picking you up off the street.

The Walls Project aims to colour the world with graffiti art. See what these Scottish artists created for it...

Last month, Scottish graffiti artists Macism and Spore were invited to paint a huge mural in East London as part of the Walls Project run by Global Street Art. The Walls Project is an initiative to bring more public street art works to the world, starting with the city of London and this new mural marked the 100th wall.

Taking over three days, the mural was the biggest collaboration so far by the two artists from Dundee and Glasgow who are known for their mix of photorealism and abstract graffiti art. The wall was loosely based on the theme of water and will hopefully act as a springboard for further public wall commissions and projects in Scotland and further afield.

The next big project will see them painting another public mural at Upfest, a street art festival in Bristol this May.

You can go see Spore and Macism’s finished mural at 5th Base Gallery, 23 Heneage Street, London.

Scottish stencil artist Klingatron shares with us where he creates

Nominated for Best Scottish Artist at the 2011 Scottish Variety Awards, Klingatron prides himself on creating paintings from intensely detailed and intricate hand cut stencils. Over the years Klingatron has exhibited his paintings in numerous shows across the UK including three Solo exhibitions as well as several group exhibitions in Australia.

—

I am most happiest when I’m in my studio. I spend a lot of time cutting stencils in order to create my paintings so it makes sense for me to love my surroundings. The idea of spending the day, night or both in my studio is something I look forward to everyday with some tunes in the background with my dog chilling in her bed whilst I cut away.

When I get an idea in my head I pretty much just go for it. I’m not really one to doodle in a sketchbook, my work mainly sparks from photography and then I just plan in my mind what I want to do then just begin to cut the stencils. I started using stencils as a way to create art in my final year of art college, easily frustrated with the work I was creating and having no patience I stumbled in to stenciling and found that I did have the patience to sit for hours upon hours to create detailed stencils. Looking back now, they weren’t that detailed compared to now but you have to crawl before you can walk.

I started creating paintings of things that were around me like portraits of my friends but that progressed to my environment. My urban landscape paintings of New York, Rome and Glasgow dictated the way I worked for several years and allowed me to develop my skills to create super delicate and detailed stencils, making the spray paint finish look almost photographic.

Most recently I have been working on portrait pieces again and combining the detailed stencil work with free hand work. My studio has never been such a mess and again that’s why I love working in there. I go in there now not knowing what the hell is going to happen. My studio wall itself is an ever changing work of art.

I am currently busy working away in my studio for an up and coming exhibition to be held in London.
