Sutcliffe will include in this brunch session an excerpt from Word for Word the 70s BBC book program presented by Robert Robinson in which Ian McEwan’s literary agent Tom Maschler, Auberon Waugh and Julian Gloag talk about the plot of McEwan’s ‘The Cement Garden’ and its notorious similarities to Gloag’s ‘Our Mother’s House’ which was published 15 years earlier.

There will be a launch party on Saturday 1 February to showcase a new programme of workshops, classes and events as well as the refit of The Imaginarium space. somewhereto_ re:store provides spaces for 16-25 year olds to use in any way they want within the creative arts and enterprise.

Following on from the success of last summer’s nationwide launch of re:store, somewhereto_ are pleased to announce plans are underway to continue the resurgence of activity in the disused spaces of North Glasgow.

somewhereto_ have been busy curating activities to support continued regional efforts and encourage local and social enterprise amongst the young, creative and ambitious. somewhereto_ in association with icecream architecture and Hot Tap Media, launched re:store in Glasgow as part of a nationwide campaign funded by a £7m injection from The Big Lottery Fund, to reclaim the high street and offer young entrepreneurial people the opportunity to realise their ideas in creative pop up spaces all over the country.

somewhereto_ Project Managers Joe Grehan and Catherine Smith are currently working with young people in partnership with Depot Arts and the Concrete Garden, whom set up The Imaginarium as a joint project to encourage community arts project that serve the Possilpark area, regularly organising weekly folk music sessions, craft, cookery and garden workshops, street-art workshops, exhibitions, swap shop meets and song-writing classes throughout the year.

Kerrigan Renniegade (24) has been involved with the re:store project since we started in December 2013. She’s an illustrator and a street artist and is working on a number of art projects with The Imaginarium. She’s been running a small business customising shoes and commisioned art prints (see image above).

Kerrigan will be helping with Depot Art’s new weekly portfolio drop in sessions starting and is working on a photography/portrait project of 10 local hip hop artists to be exhibited within The Imaginarium. She has this to say about the project:

“I think we need more places like The Imaginarium”. The people here and the work they do I inspiring and has encouraged me as a young artist to express myself and made me realise that I can make things happen.”

Now in the process of inviting a fresh new wave of 16-25 year olds in North Glasgow, somewhereto_ are asking like minded people to come down and check out the free event at The Imaginarium to unleash their imagination within the creative space, and take the opportunity to talk with somewhereto_ representatives whilst proactively seeking out new spaces for potential ventures. The newly refurbished building opens its doors this February with a new programme of workshops, events and activities to showcase the diverse talent of local young people.

somewhereto_ provides mentoring and access to free spaces for 16 – 25 year olds, allowing them the flexibility and inspiration to do the things they love…no opportunity is too big or too small! From 3 February, re:store managers are available every Monday from 10:00am – 2:00pm to welcome young people into their space and chat through ideas. If you’re 16-25 and want to get involved, please visit here.

Mercy is an ambitious collective who do pretty much everything you can possibly imagine

Mercy is a comprehensive arts agency and design studio which is ten years old this year

Ever since we started out as a zine and poetry event in Liverpool, we’ve been guided by the network of artists, writers and designers that surround us, and the things that really get us out of bed in the morning – that’s meant that we’ve delivered a massive range of work over the years, from brand identity and digital campaigns, to copywriting and live illustration. Right now, we have a fantastic roster of clients for our design, and an arts programme that produces new language-led commissions in performance, new media and the public realm.

The central strand of our arts programme is currently Electronic Voice Phenomena, it’s about really engaging with the technological interface, and seeing how it can be a kind of tool for experiencing language in new ways. We’ve been experimenting with and developing some new interfaces, such as LiveWriting which allows us to create live-written text animations. Working collaboratively with artists as we did with Sam Meech for LiveWriting is at the core of our values and is a key reason why we’ve been able to stick around for so long.

The Electronic Voice Phenomena theme is going to be part of our collaboration with Liverpool Biennial 2012 this Autumn, where we’ll again be working with Anat Ben David, Steven Fowler, Hannah Silver and Scanner. We’ve worked with the Liverpool Biennial since 2008 and have always aimed to present a completely new Mercy event for each festival. We always say this year will be our most ambitious, but it’s probably more honest to say that we’re always challenging ourselves and the Biennial is a great way of identifying how much we’ve grown over a two year period.

As soon as we’re finished with the Biennial (5 -7 October) we move straight onto the Manchester weekender where we’ll be creating a huge self-generating feedback loop of spoken word, live sampling, processing and projection at The Cornerhouse.

Between then and our EVP Spring tour with Penned in the Margins, we’ll be working closely with Young Pines, our pilot scheme to identify new ways for young talent to break into the creative industries. This year alone we’ve worked with FACT on a network where poets can learn coding, called Syntax, organised documentation from a 48 hour performance by Mark Greenwood, presented an EVP free for all at Cafe Oto and are now getting towards the finishing post with some work with public artist Laurence Payot and designer Scott Spencer.

All this is part of a GFA from Arts Council, which we supplement with workshops, other grant funds, and tickets, and partnership other galleries and festivals like the Biennial, FACT, Ideastap, Cornerhouse and AND Festival – as well as more independent organisations like new music curators like Deep Hedonia, Hive and Samizdat in Liverpool. We’re really proud of these partnerships, and we try to keep up with them all while building new ones. Just now, we’re chatting with super-cool curators Trigger in Scotland.

We were once told Mercy are generous which is something we’ve really clung onto. We wouldn’t grow if we didn’t actively seek opportunities to work with new illustrators and developers, artists and promoters. There are so many opportunities available if people are willing to step outside of their comfort zone.

It’s satisfying to make your living from ideas, but to make it work, it has to be intense most of the time.
