Dave Sedgwick is a Manchester based designer currently organising an exhibition showcasing Spanish design agencies. Read on to hear more about it all from Dave himself.

Hey Studio

BCN:MCR is a design exhibition and creative event to be held this February/March in 2022NQ, Manchester. Launching on Thursday 21 February, it will feature the work of five of Barcelona’s best design agencies. Lo Siento, Mayuscula, Hey Studio, Lamosca and Mucho will all be showcasing their work as part of this unique event.

Lamosca

It has all been pulled together by me, Dave Sedgwick. I am a designer working and living in Manchester and I have always had an interest in Spanish design and a love for the city of Barcelona. On a recent trip to the city I visited these agencies and started discussing an opportunity to do this in the UK. They all seemed very interested and what’s great is that they all have some form of connection to each other, whether that’s that they used to work or study together! I had no idea of that when I first contacted them and it’s only really come about since the show has gathered momentum!

Lo Siento

The work of all 5 agencies is different. For example Lo Siento like to work in a more tactile and hands on way, whereas Hey Studio is much more about illustrative styles. I think having all of this work under one roof will be really interesting and a chance to see something a bit different in Manchester.

Mayuscula

As part of the weekend on Friday 22 February a few of the agencies are coming over to do a talk about their work, influences, methods and the design scene in Spain in general. This will be a ticketed event and information will be on the website/twitter page. So make sure to follow @bcnmcr for more information!

Mucho

Each agency has also taken one of the 6 letters from BCN:MCR and have created a unique design for the identity. I will be providing the 6th letter. It’s a one off collaboration between all 6 of us and will be exhibited as part of the show.

Hey Studio

Doing something like this has been a real learning curve for me. I am doing it with no funding at all and only the support of Team Impression, GF Smith Papers and Estrella Damm. I am sure I have pestered and frustrated all of the agencies as I continue to ask for things from them! But when it all comes together it will certainly be worthwhile.

Lo Siento

I’ve always wanted to do an exhibition of some sorts and doing this is certainly in at the deep end! I don’t speak any Spanish, so it’s not always been easy. But each agency have been absolutely brilliant and without them all I really couldn’t have done this.

Mayuscula

Also a big thanks to 2022NQ and TAKK who will be showing the work. The launch night will be completely free entry and the show will be up for 2 weeks. The event on the Friday will be ticketed only and numbers will be restricted, so be sure to get in early if you want to see some amazing talks!

Mucho

BCN:MCR will run from 21 – 23 February at 2022NQ and TAKK, Manchester.
