Explore the relationship between artists’ film and new writing

Film and Video Umbrella (FVU) and The White Review present White Screen, an online project exploring the relationship between artists’ film and new writing. Launched earlier this summer White Screen will present a newly selected artists’ film each month – for a limited period – alongside specially-commissioned essays.

Drawing on FVU’s extensive history of commissioning, producing and supporting artists’ film, White Screen enables important works to be accessed afresh by a generation who might not otherwise have encountered them. Reflecting on the changing role of artists’ moving image in the digital age – its production, consumption and dissemination – each new essay provides a contemporary response to a historical moment.

Marxism Today by Phil Collins

At the time of writing, Phil Collins’ Marxism Today, 2010 was up on White Screen. This film tells the stories of former Marxism-Leninism teachers in Communist East Germany. Nina Power Philosophy teacher at the University of Roehampton and Critical Writing in Art & Design at the Royal College of Art has written a response to Collins’ film, which you can read here.

Hospitalfield House, exterior

Join artists’ film and video legend John Smith, artist Stephen Sutcliffe known for his archive based film collages and designers Bespoke Atelier for a weekend of artist’s screenings, workshops, talks and conversations at Hospitalfield, Arbroath.

John Smith’s Home Suite 1993-94

On Saturday 26 June the influential artist filmmaker John Smith will screen his work Home Suite (1993-4) with a discussion and dinner. Artist Stephen Sutcliffe will be screening Our Mother’s House (1967) which will lead to a discussion with John Smith over brunch on Sunday 27 June. Sutcliffe will include in this brunch session an excerpt from Word for Word the 70s BBC book program presented by Robert Robinson in which Ian McEwan’s literary agent Tom Maschler, Auberon Waugh and Julian Gloag talk about the plot of McEwan’s ‘The Cement Garden’ and its notorious similarities to Gloag’s ‘Our Mother’s House’ which was published 15 years earlier.

You can book a workshop with designers Bespoke Atelier to print and make a bag inspired by the pattern and surfaces within Hospitalfield. This is also a chance to explore the house, its 1901 Studios and gardens.

It’s free to explore the house and attend the screening and discussion events. There is a materials cost for the Bespoke Atelier workshops. As the John Smith events run late into the evening and across two days Hospitalfield are offering some hospitality, camping and beds. Booking is strongly recommended and registration can be completed online here.

Hospitalfield Summer Open Weekend runs from 26 – 27 June in Arbroath, Scotland. For a full schedule of the weekend programme, please visit here.
