Live art festival in its 5th consecutive year.

//BUZZCUT// are Nick Anderson and Rosana Cade, two friends and performance makers who running this performance and live-art festival that happens annually in Glasgow. They are so delighted to be working towards their fifth 5-day festival.

Nick and Rosana tell us what they have in store for 2016.

Jamie Lewis Hadley , Blood on the Streets, 2015

The festival started in 2012 at The Old Hairdressers and has now grown and shifted to The Pearce Institute in Govan. We totally love being at The Pearce Institute as it has been a community centre for over 100 years, and still is! Last year’s festival was a total joy, with about 60 performances ranging from studio performances to durational body-based performances, one-on-one pieces and outdoor work. It will be similar again this year and we can’t wait to invite you in.

The whole festival runs on a ‘pay-what-you-can’ system and you don’t need to book any tickets in advance. There will also be great food served all day from local Govan eatery, Cafe 13! We will be releasing a full brochure with all artist and show info in late March, which you’ll be able to find on our website.

This year we have particular plans and resource to help absolutely everyone attend and enjoy the festival and we are placing a lot of work into increasing the accessibility of the event. We will have PAs, BSL interpreters and more who are available to help. You can call us on: 07834751536 to speak directly with us about any questions you have.

We always aim for //BUZZCUT// to be a place that you can basically just turn up and be looked after with warmth, inspiration and comfort!

//BUZZCUT// is a collaboration between two artists in Glasgow dedicated to creating exciting, supportive environments for artists and audiences to experiment with live performance.

//BUZZCUT// looks to open up new spaces for performance to happen, to bring new audiences to live art, and to create new opportunities for artists to make and share work.

//BUZZCUT// is about sharing; sharing food, sharing ideas and support, opening up doors and sharing homes.

//BUZZCUT// is about knowing we can be lateral… and actively disobeying hierarchies.

The line-up is always half Scotland-based artists and the other half from across the world. We’re super excited about all the work in the programme and to name just a few, this year includes work from: Nic Green and Tam McGarvey, Mary Coble, Fallope and The Tubes, FK Alexander, Gavin Krastin, Antonija Livingstone and many, many more!

Catherine Street showcases her most ambitious AV project to date

Edinburgh based artist Catherine Street presents new work at the Reid Gallery this spring. Expect an exhibition which can also be considered as an unfolding piece of theatre. Voice recordings, flickering projections and live performances combine to create an atmosphere of intense reverie.

Street often incorporates her own body into an installation setting that has video, audio, drawn, sculptural, and written elements. The atmosphere is usually unnerving, tense, sensual, comical. Intense breathing sounds give the viewer the feeling of moving inside the lungs, the body’s cavities – whilst her writings often describe a desire to break apart the flesh and return it to its constituent elements.

During the exhibition, there will be several live performances where the artist’s voice is slow and meditative as she combines live and recorded spoken word. The looped imaginings, calculations and speculations mingle with intense breathing and whistling sounds as well as field recordings made in the streets surrounding GSA. The performance is conceived as part of the installation, audience members are encouraged to come and go as they please.

Catherine Street will be exhibiting new works at Reid Gallery, The Glasgow School of Art from 18 – 30 April. Performances will take place on 22 – 25 April and 29 – 30 April from 3.30-4.30pm.

A new contemporary textile collective in the UK

Kalopsia was founded in 2012 by four Textile graduates all with an unique and different approach to Textiles. They work with everything from system design, video installations, traditional weaving, pattern cutting to performance art. They are currently based in Edinburgh and will in 2013, open UK’s first dedicated Contemporary Textile gallery with the aim to develop a platform and opportunities for graduates and established creators.

It was after their first textile exhibitions in the UK and Scandinavia that they realised the lack of space for contemporary textiles within the art community and the general lack of understanding of what textiles can be. It was from this realisation that their goal became to provide opportunities for contemporary textiles to be seen and understood.

Kalopsia now brings attention to this upcoming field and sees textiles as a distinct artistic practice which opens up the debate on “What is Textiles”. This is the title of Kalopsia’s current exhibition on at Whitespace, Edinburgh until 2 May.
