The Lighthouse’s inaugural Lighthouse Late event held an ambitious programme of design, music and film staged across all five floors. Central Station’s Kim Stewart was in attendance to bring you the details from the night.

Stepping into The Lighthouse last Friday, I was greeted by the design legend himself, Ken Garland. In my bewilderment, he asked if this was my first time at The Lighthouse. “Nnn-oo” I stammered. “I’ve only been twice and will definitely be coming here more often…there’s a talk upstairs I’d avoid as the guy’s had way too much wine” he responded. Chuckling, I made my way upstairs where Scott Paterson of Sons and Daughters had control of the decks.

Going against his own advice, I went to see the slightly intoxicated Ken Garland speak about everything from William of Orange to the recent Scottish Referendum. His lively presentation was a condensed history lesson of murals, posters and signs from republicans, unionists and protestors.

With so much going on, it was impossible to see everything but thankfully things had been delayed upstairs and I managed to catch Tony Brook’s presentation. The cricket-loving Creative Director used Field of Dreams’ famous quote “build it [and they] will come” as an analogy of Spin‘s attitude towards their work; self-initiated motion graphics projects led to designing Channel 4′s identity. Brook also discussed his publishing venture with Adrian Shaughnessy, Unit Editions which sees their second manual on design and identity guidelines released next month (aptly titled Manuals 2).

Gabriella Marcella | Risotto Studio

There was a short recess before the next talk and so I headed downstairs to see what was happening in the workshops. Gabriella Marcella from Risotto Studio was demonstrating her risograph printer and Alice Dansey-Wright offered the opportunity to contribute to her work ‘Legitimate Likenesses‘ which will soon be exhibited at The Lighthouse.

Finally, Jonathan Barnbrook discussed his controversial album design cover for David Bowie’s The Next Day. His design underwent a great deal of development work over three months, culminating in a “reductive design.” Barnbrook went on to explain typography as representation of language. His own Mason typeface (originally titled ‘Manson’ after the serial killer Charles Manson) portrays beauty and violence. He described the oddity of seeing people tattooing their bodies with his typeface.

Claiming “designers have to take responsibility for the work they choose,” Barnbrook showed the work he created for Adbusters and Occupy London. He has turned Coca Cola down three times as they represent “the worst of American Capitalism.”

GFT Short Film Programme

Throughout the night there were short films from Glasgow Film Theatre and a screening of Stuart Murdoch’s (Belle and Sebastian) God Help the Girl, as well as performances by Ella the Bird and James Yorkston. With such a busy programme, unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to see these. Overall, this event marks the beginning of something exciting happening in Glasgow. In a city renowned for its visual art, The Lighthouse is actively encouraging new dialogues amongst designers and creatives.

Lighthouse Late is a late night event on 24 October which will feature design, music, film and more staged across the five floors of the Lighthouse.

Featuring well-known designers Ken Garland, Tony Brook and Jonathan Barnbrook, the evening offers a view into the minds of some of of Britain’s most-talented creatives.

Enjoy a selection of short films commissioned by Glasgow Film or check out a series of short films around urbanography from METASITU. If you haven’t seen Stuart Murdoch’s God Help the Girl, the evening presents a chance to see it on the big screen. Are you more of a hands-on kind of creative? Try a risograph print workshop from Gabriella Marcella of Risotto, or take part in illustrator Alice Dansey-Wright’s workshop and contribute to the commemorative Lighthouse Latework “Legitimate Likenesses.” Finally, investigate the world of digital fabrication with MAKLab 3D printing demonstrations.

There will be live DJ sets from Scott Paterson of Sons and Daughters and Joe Rattary from Admiral Fallow and performances from Glasgow based singer and performer Ella the Bird and Scottish folk singer and songwriter James Yorkston.

Lighthouse Late runs on the evening of 24 October. For more information see the Lighthouse’s website here.

Find out what Scotland's design companies worked on for the Commonwealth Games

The Lighthouse played host to established and budding designers last Friday night with an impressive line-up of speakers discussing their work for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The event was organised by Design in Action and Creative Clyde. Here’s a short overview of the night:

Gabriel Durnam from Graphical House with Home/Away merino wool scarves from Scotland Can Make It!

Graphical House’s Gabriel Durnam kicked off the event with an explanation of their two identities for Commonwealth Games related projects – Scotland Can Make It! and The Empire Café. Scotland Can Make It! is a Panel curated collection of six limited edition souvenirs, designed and manufactured in Scotland. For this logo, they were inspired by wreaths which were traditionally offered to winning athletes at major sporting events. The Empire Café is an exploration of Scotland’s involvement in the slave trade and the logo for this was inspired by the cross section of a ship.

Next up, Lee McLaughlin from IC Mobile Lab discussed how they got involved in a Digital Sprint Competition for the Games. They had 6.5 weeks to deliver an augmented reality app. The end result enabled users to scan Commonwealth banners, which were visible across the city (and beyond), to see Clyde the Games mascot doing a variety of different sports.

Dancing Teacake Development images by Artem

Mike Kelt from Artem talked about those infamous teacakes you saw dancing around the Opening Ceremony. With offices in Glasgow & London, Artem normally make props for Film & TV. 3D printers were used for smaller props and that giant Gretna Green sign was made using a large 7 axis robot which carves 3D objects with a 0.2mm degree of precision.

William Mitchell from 4C Design (the makers of the Queen’s baton) spoke about having to rethink their usual approach to the product design process. This was not the typical design and build for a market; it was a one-off piece meant to travel the globe. With a large number of key stakeholders all contributing their ideas, Mitchell explained the need to pin down the final design early on in the 6 month project to leave enough time for manufacturing. The lattice structure in their design relates to engineering on Glasgow’s River Clyde and it kept the Queen’s message reassuringly visible within the baton. Kays of Scotland (a curling stone supplier from Ailsa Craig) were involved in making the granite top for the baton. See more about the design of the baton on 4c’s website including images of its manufacturing here.

ISO Design’s Damien Smith ended the evening with an engaging discussion on creating motion graphics for the immense LED screen at the Opening Ceremony. ISO created over two hours of sequences for the 18 million pixel LED screen using a variety of different techniques. The most challenging aspect of this was the Athlete’s Parade where ISO wanted to show all 71 flags in an interesting and dynamic way by deconstructing the flags themselves and combining them with live broadcast material. See more from Damien about ISO’s work on the Games in a Q&A on Central Station here.
