Lights go down on Peacock’s Northern Light Contemporary Arts Centre

Hi folks,

You perhaps heard that Aberdeen City Council decided to vote against Peacocks new arts centre for Union Terrace Gardens and instead back Sir Ian Woods Civic Square project.

This is a sad day not only for Peacock, UTG but also for democracy in Aberdeen after a public consultation that showed the people of Aberdeen did not support the Civic Square Project was completely ignored by the elected officlals in the council.

That same public consultation cost £300K was paid for by tax payers money. 12 local councillors abstained from their public duty to vote and many were misinformed by Aberdeen City Council officials who released an inaccurate document just days before the council vote.

Last night, Campaign Director Elly Rothnie was made redundant, as Peacock made the inevitable decision to abandon their UTG arts centre proposal. This is another GREAT loss for Aberdeen. See local article here.

I wish to thank all of you who supported the campaign by signing petitions, writing letters, making images and video. Thank you so much…

If you want to continue to support Peacock Visual Arts on their new journey towards development please do so by becoming a friend.

You can join in with thousands of Aberdeen people who are now trying to save the gardens for the public, rather than let the city centre be bought by big business. Two new facebook groups have been set up for this purpose.
