Find out more about new poetry collective, SHIFT/

Brand new poetry collective, SHIFT/ tell us why they got together and what we can expect from them at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

So hello, we are SHIFT/, seven of Scotland’s most dynamic, provocative and lyrical spoken word artists (but by no stretch of the imagination, the only ones). Formed by Rachel McCrum and Bram E Geiben, we have joined forces – like some super-powered comic book phalanx – as an artist-led collective to create a platform for poetic performance in the Edinburgh Fringe that works for us.

As well as Rachel and Bram, SHIFT/ is powered by Rachel Amey, Harry Giles, Jenny Lindsay, Ali Maloney and Sam Small. Between us we have a wealth and diverse range of experience. Collectively, we have won slams, shattered boundaries, toured the world, won awards and broken hearts; promoted, wrought and slogged.

As the Scottish poetry scene is running on full, breath taking, power, SHIFT/ exists to take seven unique and exciting shows to Summerhall – crossing bridges between performance poetry and physical theatre, stand-up and live art, spoken word and music, solemn introspection and punk spit – a different show for each night of the week.

Right now, we are writing, devising, crafting our shows, which could touch upon anything including, but not limited to: cyberpunk dystopian opera, political analysis, BSL, love, clowning, messing around in boats, love on drugs, nihilism, optimism, Dadaism, borders and colonialism and Lovecratian tentacle apocalypses.

We’ll be in the Cairns Lecture theatre in Summerhall every night of the Fringe at 9:30. For full line-ups and updates, get SHIFT/ed at www.shiftword.com.

Glasgow Film Festival’s Crossing the Line strand showcases experimental and artist films. Don’t miss special events co-curated with Glasgow-based organisations LUX Scotland, MAP and CCA with one-off screenings, panel discussions, and pop-up events.

An art & activist zine with an open submission policy

Twigs & Apples zine started in 2009, in the rainy northern city of Preston. It came about as a collective of four friends, Sarah Riddel, Stuart Saint, Benedict Rutherford and Steph Fletcher, each with different creative backgrounds but a shared interest in writing, art and activism. Here, Steph Fletcher tells us more…

The first few issues were produced as basic, hand cut ‘n pasted photocopied zines, filled with drawings, rants, reviews, poetry, photography, and more. As we continued it as a biannual publication, we refined the design and now make it as a digital, quality print on recycled paper.

It was really important to us that, from the start, we had an ‘open submission’ policy – that anyone could submit anything (within reason) and we’d print and distribute it. We really enjoy offering an open, non-commerical, non-profit platform for alternative views and creative output.

In the past few years we’ve expanded to design, publish and distribute other titles, from solo photography zines to event guides, and we also produce lino and screen prints. We’re excited to be launching screenprinted t-shirts later in the year, as well as two new regular titles – focusing on photography and arts/activism.

We really enjoy the sense of community around the zine scene, whether receiving submissions, orders and comments from around the world, or travelling to zine fairs.

You can find us online at: twigsandapples.tumblr.com, @twigsandapples, and ‘Twigs and Apples Publishing‘ on Facebook. We have an Etsy as well as being stocked in shops across the North (see our blog for a list of stockists) – and we’re always looking for new stockists!

If you’d like to contribute, take a look at our site for more of an idea of our content. Topics regularly include: film, music, philosophy, poetry, vegan recipes, anarchism, fiction, environment, politics, travel, art, craft, and more.

I started Ponytail in the summer of 2010, with the simple idea of creating something I would like to read, something exciting that was filled with fresh voices. Like many creative careers and pursuits, it’s pretty hard to start out as a writer, there is a lot of self-doubt and rejection and it’s difficult (as cliched as it may sound) to get a foot on the ladder. I wanted to make something that was approachable for anyone to submit to, a sort of ‘lo-fi literature review’, that was firmly about literature without being stuffy or haughty. Also, rather selfishly as a writer, it made me start writing more myself as well as viewing my work with a more critical, editorial eye. I came up with the name Ponytail because all my other options were mocked into non-existence by my friends and at 3am in the morning, a pun on tale/tail seemed Wilde-ly witty.

I knew very little about running zines when I started out, and it’s definitely been a fun and rewarding learning curve in both an editorial and design sense. Each issue has a specific theme, and this has proven to be a really great way to curate a lot of different voices and ideas. Although originally, Ponytail started out as a short story zine only, over time I’ve opened up submissions to also include poetry, personal essays and comic strips which has definitely given more variety to the content. I suppose this has been inspired by my own discoveries and developing tastes for things like the personal essays of Lena Dunham and David Sedaris, a rediscovered folder stuffed full of Richard Brautigan’s poetry and the humour pieces in McSweeneys. On the design side of things, when all the zines are laid out side by side you can see how I’ve definitely faffed around with logos and visual identity a lot. Finally, with the latest issue (#4 The Food Issue), I’ve settled on a design I’m really happy with and I’ve started to hand-bind and risograph print them.

There are lots of exciting things happening in 2013 for Ponytail. The next issue (#5 “Brief Encounters”) should be out in February and there have been tons of brilliant submissions so far. I’m particularly excited about what is probably the best cover of all time by illustrator Will Daw. Other projects include a tie-in podcast with readings, interviews and other pieces, and a separate publication I’ve been curating since the summer called “No-One Understands Me” which is a collection of people’s embarrassing teenage diaries. As I’m moving abroad in a couple of weeks I’m hoping to distribute through a few more shops and distros in the UK and beyond. In the meanwhile, all issues are available to buy on the Ponytail blog.

Ferment is a themed creative writing and illustration zine

We recently caught up with Sarah Plant who told us all about her non-profit illustration and creative writing zine.

Ferment is an illustrated literary zine put together by Paul Askew, James Weiner and myself, Sarah Plant. For each issue we ask sixteen writers and illustrators to contribute.

Every issue we choose a theme, the theme is widely interpreted by our invited contributors.

Initially writers respond to the theme, then illustrators respond to those writers’ poems or short stories. We pair the illustrators and writers, then publish the work as a 12 page black and white newspaper printed by The Newspaper Club.

Ferment began because we wanted to do something creative together that we had control over. Outside of the 9-5, it was fun to make something for other people to enjoy and an experimental project for us. Never a profit making project, the cost of producing zine is covered by selling it locally in Oxford & on our website.

Our themes have ranged from Naked, A Single Letter, to Cities and Upside Down with covers illustrated by Al Murphy, Mister Mourao & Matt Blease.

Illustrators and writers sometimes surprise us by taking the theme in interesting and bizarre directions like ‘Potatoes’ in issue 3- Food. Once the pairings are all in, its my job to set the layout of the zine and the tone for that issue. This is my favorite bit of Ferment, as the contributors’ work is so good and bloody funny.

Recently, as well as producing the zine, we have been playing with the idea of Ferment Mini. Poems & stories printed using miniature printers like Bergs Little Printer.

James custom made a mini printer to print some of our poems & short stories. The result, pocket sized pieces of poetry with illustrations to keep or give to friends.

Ferment mini is playful and interesting, but there are some downsides. Its narrow column length (receipt sized) means some stories end up over a metre long! We don’t intend to offer Ferment mini as a service at the moment, nevertheless its an interesting addition to the Ferment story.

If you are interested in contributing to Ferment, email us & you can buy issues of the zine here.

Alex Hetherington talks about his combined education, film, print and performance project Modern Edinburgh Film School

Alex Hetherington, print edition fundraiser takes us through his new project: Modern Edinburgh Film School.

Modern Edinburgh Film School is an education, research and production project that aims to explore, through a temporary participatory film school, combined themes of the sculptural screen, narrative and space, event as image, and acoustics and noise as form. It is an ambitious project that develops over participation with moving image artists, a curriculum of published film essays on recent and historical figures in moving image practices, a group show and screenings and the development of a new film that seeks to identify and explore the poetry embedded in an “Edinburgh screen, an Edinburgh camera” taken from an essay an American artist wrote in the late 1960s/early 1970s about art and film in Edinburgh.

The project seeks to raise funds to assist in the costs of publications, and to pay a group of artists in filmmaking and the moving image to contribute to the School as visiting lecturers, as faculty.

The work has a venue for next year, to be finally confirmed and has attracted some public funding and while I am attracted to crowd-funding it does not seem practical to the nature of the show, which is discreet and academic. With this in mind I have created a small temporary print shop, featuring five new limited edition prints in the hope that this will raise £400-£1000 to contribute to the print costs for the Curriculum essays and artists fees.

The School will present a series of sessions on film and poetry, with the notion of a symposium and graduation at its completion. These themes are: “On Spaces of Uncertain Function”, “A Transmitter of Mysteries”, “Filming Day for Night, its message is open and allusive”, “This space evaporates, pursues, too, yet requests time”, “flowers and questions, indoor: blue, black, permanent”, “Sculptural revisions, additions, equally found on photographs, maybe poetry and possibly films” and “Displayed revisions echo future actions.”

It continues my work across the possibilities of combined media: writing, performance, sculptural installation, photographic images and recorded sound, alongside a deepening enquiry into the constructs of and ephemeral gestures of identity, knowledge, feminine connotations and perception, which has included curated projects Belle Helaine for The Briggait, Heavy Influence for ESW and The Consequence for CCA/Intermedia, the installation Leves Vos Skinny Fists Comme Antennas to Heavenfor The Embassy, the performance Untitled (2011) at Edinburgh International Film Festival, the film Linda Fratianne for CCA and writing on Rosemarie Trockel, Kate V Robertson, Tim Rollins and K.O.S. and Kai-Oi Jay Yung.

Modern Edinburgh Film School will call for participants and contributions from Edinburgh-based education sites in moving image, and contemporary visual artists by invitation.

Find more about the project on Tumblr and follow Alex on Twitter here.

Popshot is a bi-annual arts magazine which champions poetry and illustration.

Popshot is a bi-annual arts magazine which champions poetry and illustration. The aim is to bring poetry to a wider and more diverse audience with the helping hands of illustration, good typography, quality printing and some fine uncoated paper.

Popshot’s Jacob Denno tells us more:

Popshot started as a mini rebellion against how poetry was presenting itself to the outside world and the musty, elitist and exclusive reputation it had managed to acquire. Poetry can be an amazing art form which when written well can move people in ways that other forms of literature can’t. I didn’t really think other poetry magazines were doing a good job of showing that, so Popshot became the vehicle to publish what has since been dubbed ‘pop poetry’ – poetry that’s a little more accessible and isn’t afraid of the odd rhyme here and there.

Aims from early days have definitely mellowed. In the early days it felt like Popshot was on a bit of a mission to change the reputation of poetry altogether, which isn’t such an easy task. I think it’s important for every new magazine to have a strong mission statement and define why it needs to exist, however, as time has gone by and Popshot has started to develop a reputation for itself as a publisher of new and interesting writing, the desire to continue preaching against the establishment has lessened somewhat. Nowadays, the focus is much more on making Popshot as good as it can be, rather than trying to convince people that poetry isn’t just for people who wear tweed jackets.

Being named as one of the ‘fresh breed of literary magazines’ by The Independent was a bit of a highlight, as well as being placed on The Observer’s ‘Cool List’ back in 2010. I’m not sure whether that makes it cool now though… Gaining international distribution into 18 countries was a pretty big achievement and knowing that Popshot can be found on the shelves of Barnes & Noble in Hawaii, or in a newsagents in Sao Paulo, never seems to wear thin!

Issue 7 has just come out so that’s pretty exciting to have created another issue that I’m super proud of. There are also changes afoot with the magazine as of Issue 8. I’ve had ideas circulating around my head for a long while as to where I want the magazine to go and hopefully this year that’ll happen. It won’t be anything super drastic but it will mean the magazine will become a little more refined and a little wider in terms of remit. I’ll stop talking before I give too much away!

People can get involved by heading to our website, and more specifically to the ‘submit’ page, then reading every word that’s on there. Popshot has an open policy which means we collate poetry on a submissions basis – so the most famous poet in the world is given the same amount of time and attention as the kid that just wrote their first poem. It’s all done on the individual merit of the poem. The illustrators however are individually commissioned so if you want to get involved, write us a nice email and send a link to your portfolio/website.

Depending on where you are in the world, there might be a bookshop nearby that stocks Popshot. You can find out if there is by heading to our stockists page. Alternatively, you can order any of our issues through the Popshot online shop. We ship to anywhere in the world so geographical distance is no boundary whatsoever.

An engaging true story about a trail of mysterious paper sculptures

Those of you who don’t keep up with Edinburgh’s literary world through Twitter may have missed the recent spate of mysterious paper sculptures appearing around the city.

Guardian article, 3rd March 2011.

One day in March, staff at the Scottish Poetry Library came across a wonderful creation, left anonymously on a table in the library. Carved from paper, mounted on a book and with a tag addressed to @byleaveswelive – the library’s Twitter account – reading:

It started with your name @byleaveswelive and became a tree.… … We know that a library is so much more than a building full of books… a book is so much more than pages full of words.… This is for you in support of libraries, books, words, ideas….. a gesture (poetic maybe?)

Next to the ‘poetree’ sat a paper egg lined with gold and a scatter of words which, when put together, make “A Trace of Wings” by Edwin Morgan.

Nobody knew where it came from, nor was anyone forthcoming with information in person or online, despite a fair amount of local news coverage.

It looked like this was a one-off, a beautiful and delicate piece of art created by a fan of the Poetry Library. Until, in late June, the National Library of Scotland found themselves the recipient of a similar piece.

A gramophone and a coffin, sculpted from a copy of Ian Rankin’s Exit Music, and again deposited anonymously. Some say the newly opened National Museum, others suggest the Edinburgh International Book Festival. It’s all a bit exciting!

Having been on display in the Scottish Poetry Library for a few months, the poetree is now kept behind the counter for safety, but if you ask nicely I’m sure they would let you have a look.

“It’s important that a story is not too long ……does not become tedious …….

‘You need to know when to end a story,’ she thought.

Often a good story ends where it begins. This would mean a return to the
Poetry Library. The very place where she had left the first of the ten.

Back to those who had loved that little tree, and so encouraged her to try
again …….and again.

Some had wondered who it was, leaving these small strange objects. Some
even thought it was a ‘he’! ……. As if!

Others looked among Book Artists, rather good ones actually…….

But they would never find her there. For though she does make things, this
was the first time she had dissected books and had used them simply be-
cause they seemed fitting….

Most however chose not to know….. which was the point really.

The gift, the place to sit, to look, to wonder, to dream….. of the impossible
maybe…….

A tiny gesture in support of the special places…..

So, here, she will end this story, in a special place … A Poetry Library …..
where they are well used to ‘anon.’

But before exiting …a few mentions. There could be more, because we
have all colluded to make this work……. Just a few though.

- the twitter community who in some strange way gave rise to the idea in
the first place

-@chrisdonia who gave the story a place, a shape and some great pictures

- and not least @Beathhigh whose books and reputation have been shame-
lessly utilised in the making of a mystery ……..

…… But hold on. Someone’s left behind a pair of gloves and a cap……….?

Cheers Edinburgh It’s been fun!
X

A wonderful end to a wonderful story and a lovely mention for a humble photographer! But talk of ten sculptures had everyone a-flutter. There were only eight we knew of, what of the remaining two? Could they have been lost? stolen? or worse, thrown away by someone who didn’t realise what they had found?

Mercifully the answer was forthcoming the next day. The National Museum of Scotland had received a gift, found on the plinth under a skeletal stag. A consciencious member of staff had found it and passed it to his supervisor, thinking it might be something more than average lost property. It soon made its way up the chain of command until it came to rest in the Director’s office for safety.

Meanwhile the museum staff were abuzz with the imminent arrival of their millionth visitor since reopening (which was a surprise as that wasn’t really expected until about August 2012) so they didn’t have time to tell the world about it until that had died down.

And so another is unveiled!

A Tyrannosaurus Rex, bursting from the tattered leaves of a book. And what book could it be other than Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World?

The tag here reads:

“For @NtlMuseumsScot A Gift

And in the corner, 9/10.

Hidden amidst the tattered leaves of the book are tiny men with weapons that probably wouldn’t do much damage to the beast, as its bloodstained jaw seems to prove.

And what of the last?

Yesterday afternoon staff at the Writer’s Museum found something atop the donations box in the Robert Louis Stevenson room.

A wonderfully atmospheric street scene with what appears to be a silvery moon with wisps of cloud hanging from it. This tag reads:

And the 8/10 in the corner, confirming that we’ve found them all!

Inside the book are an array of people with birds on wires and a streetlight…

Along the front of the scene have been placed the words, “commingled out of Good and evil;” Misha Hoekstra pointed out that this is a line from Jekyll & Hyde, “I have observed that when I wore the semblance of Edward Hyde, none could come near to me at first without a visible misgiving of the flesh. This, as I take it, was because all human beings, as we meet them, are commingled out of good and evil: and Edward Hyde, alone in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil,” and that Ian Rankin has said of Hide & Seek that he was hoping to create an updated, Edinbugh-based version of Stevenson’s story.

The curators are looking into ways to display this piece although it’s possible that it will have to live in a different venue due to considerations of space – the Writer’s Museum is absolutely packed with stuff! They’re terribly happy with it though; apparently they had been hoping to receive one and now feel very lucky to have had one of the last three.

So this seems to be the end of the story. There is talk of organising some sort of exhibition but so far it’s just an idea. Some of the ‘gifts’ are viewable anyway – those in the Scottish Poetry Library, the Scottish Storytelling Centre and Central Library (the gramophone in the National Library seems to have been temporarily displaced). The rest will hopefully find a place in the public eye and I’ll keep an eye on them as I have grown rather attached.

Many thanks to whoever has been crafting and distributing these magical objects, and thanks on behalf of the creator to those who have followed their discovery with such infectious delight.

Saturday 17th December

A mysterious new Twitter account called “a book for xmas” has appeared and is tweeting @ various recipients of sculptures and others involved.

The tweets read “In support of libraries, books, words, ideas and wishing you a magical xmas” and link to a video on Vimeo:

So far those mentioned are: @byleaveswelive, @CuratorEMG, @NatLibScot, @MichaelMacLeod1 (journalist who wrote up the story extensively on the Guardian), @TalesOfOneCity, @NtlMuseumsScot, @EdinBookshop, @HughesPeg (formerly of @byleaveswelive), @Edinburgh_CC, @ScotStoryCentre, @EdBookFest, @EdinCityofLit, @AnnaNotKarenina (formerly of @EdinCityofLit), @Filmhouse, and apparently @chrisdonia would have if I hadn’t noticed and remarked upon it already…

One of the best things about the paper sculptures is that everyone who sees them, even online, gets excited and wants to share the joy.

And so last week the BBC were in town for a day, visiting the Scottish Storytelling Centre, National Museum of Scotland and Writers’ Museum to make a short piece on them. Since they didn’t have time to get around every venue the rest are represented by some of the pictures seen here.

You can see it here.

This quickly took up residence in their Most Popular section, in the top 5 for ‘Shared’ and ‘Video/Audio’. Because everyone loves them!

Small note though, I’m not sure who the journalist featured has been talking to but since we’re fairly certain the anonymous artist is a woman I suspect they’ve got it wrong…

We were all so excited about the final sculptures that the bonus one rather slipped by…

On 25 November 2011 Ian Rankin got in touch with the Edinburgh Bookshop and said that he was expecting a parcel to be delivered and asked if they could let him know when it arrived.

When the parcel arrived the writing on it seemed familiar. A quick text later and Ian arrived to open it. Sure enough, there was another fabulous papery delight, marked 11/10!

The tag reads:

For @Beathhigh A Gift
“…. something in us never dies” (R. Burns 1790)
In support of those who turn ideas
into words, words into books ……
& of course books into libraries.”
