3TONcinema

What:
San Francisco based transient microcinema and 16mm orphanage, 3TONcinema has been in operation since 2009. They have been making an effort to collect, exhibit, and appreciate 16mm films from the 20th century.

Why we like it:
By examining, sharing, and repurposing the contents of the 1000+ archival films in their possession, 3TONcinema seek to continue the work of a vibrant Bay Area ‘found-footage’ tradition that stretches back to the work of film artists such as Bruce Conner, Jerry Abrams, and Chick Strand. Dating mostly from the 1930s through the 1970s, the films in their collection are mainly ephemeral productions: educationals, newsreels, sponsored films, PSAs, etc. From these largely forgotten orphan reels, 3TONcinema hope to make sense of a better part of the last century.
